Carbomer is the trade name for polyacrylic acid. The compound is a synthetic, low molecular weight compound intended for the formulation of gel consistency products in the cosmetic, pharmaceutical and paint industries. Due to its weak anionic polyelectrolytic character, carbomer is a good polar solvent, which makes it very good at binding polar compounds (water, alcohols, aldehydes, acids, etc.). The carbomer codes (910, 934, 940, 941, and 934P) indicate the mass of the molecule and the specific components of its structure.
In cosmetics, carbomers are used extensively in skin care products, hair, nail and make-up products and toothpastes. They are also often found in alcohol-based gel hand sanitizers, because their polarity and anionic properties make them excellent thickeners of alcohols, which other thickeners cannot. Carbomer is also used to stabilize emulsions (lotions, creams, shampoos, soaps, gels, etc.) to prevent the oil phase from separating from the aqueous phase. It is also used for viscosity control in cosmetic products, as it affects a wide range of compounds and is non-hazardous (no danger phrases on the labelling).
In medicine, it is mainly used in the manufacture of adhesives for orthopedic products. Carbomer is harmless on the one hand and has a very strong adhesive power on the other.
In industry, carbomer is used in the production of SUPER ABSORBENTS because carbomers can absorb up to 100 times their own weight.
