Sulfur is a chemical element in the periodic table of the elements, designated S, sequence number 16. Sulfur is a metallic element, ranked 16th in the order of magnitude, with high electronegativity and non-metallic properties. It is used in the production of black powder. In compounds with hydrogen and oxygen it contains various anions and forms many acids and salts. Many sulfur-containing salts are poorly soluble in water. A vital element for higher organisms, it is a component of many proteins and accumulates in the hair.

In the chemical industry, sulfur is mainly used in the production of sulfuric acid, which accounts for over 85% of the total sulfur extracted. The remainder is used in the production of other materials, e.g. sulfur reacts with methane to produce carbon disulfide, from which cellophane or rayon is produced. Elemental sulfur is used in the vulcanization of rubber, where the sulfide polymers intermingle with the natural ones to produce a more rigid rubber.

In agriculture, sulfur is used as a component of fertilizers. The most important form of sulfur in fertilizers is the mineral calcium sulfate. Elemental sulfur is hydrophobic (insoluble in water) and cannot be used directly by plants. Over time, soil bacteria can convert it into soluble derivatives that can then be used by plants. Sulfur improves the efficiency of other essential plant nutrients, especially nitrogen and phosphorus. The biosulfur particles are naturally hydrophilic due to the biopolymer coating and can be more easily dispersed in the soil by dilute slurry spray, resulting in faster uptake.

In woodworking, sulfur is used in the manufacture of furniture with epoxy resin castings. Sulfur is also used in the manufacture of replicas of antique furniture, where molten sulfur is poured into the carvings and polished. Various red/orange/yellow shades are produced.

In horticulture, sulfur is one of the oldest fungicides and pesticides. "Dust sulfur", powdered sulfur, is a common fungicide for grapes, strawberries, many vegetables and several other plants. It has good efficacy against a wide range of powdery mildew diseases as well as against black spot. In organic production, sulfur is the most important fungicide. It is the only fungicide used for cold storage of organic apples against the main disease apple scab. Biosulfur (biologically produced elementary sulfur with hydrophilic properties) can also be used for these purposes. Dust sulfur in standard formulae for plants, applied by spraying sulfur dust. Wet sulfur is the commercial name for sulfur dust, composed of additional ingredients to make it easily miscible. It is used in a similar way and is used as a fungicide against mould and other mould-related plant and soil problems. Elemental sulfur powder is used as an "organic" (i.e. "green") insecticide (actually an acaricide) against ticks and mites. A common method of application is to dust clothes or limbs with sulfur powder. A dilute solution of lime sulfur (made by mixing calcium hydroxide with elemental sulfur in water) is used as a pet ointment to kill fungi, mushrooms and other dermatoses and parasites. Almost pure sulfur candles were burned to fumigate structures and wine barrels, but are now considered too toxic. Fumigation of various food preparation and storage areas and greenhouses is more common.

In the food industry, sulfur is used in the production of sulfur dioxide and in the preservation of food products. The most widespread applications are the treatment of dry products with sulfur dioxide and the processing of fruit and vegetables. It is also an old method of preserving wine, where sulfur is ignited, sulfur dioxide gas is produced and passed through the wine to produce sulfuric acid, which inhibits the growth of wine yeasts. This method is extremely rare nowadays because the specific smell of sulfur dioxide makes it unpleasant to work with, and there are ready-made compounds (sodium metabisulphite, potassium metabisulphite, etc.) that perform this function much more effectively.

In cosmetics, sulfur is used in over-the-counter drug products as an ingredient to reduce the number of spots from acne, pimples, blackheads and whiteheads and to help control dandruff, seborrhoeic dermatitis and psoriasis. In cosmetics and personal care products, sulfur is used to improve the look and feel of hair, by increasing the volume, flexibility or shine of hair, or by improving the texture and appearance of hair that has been physically or chemically damaged. Dry or damaged skin, reducing flaking and restoring elasticity.

In school experiments, sulfur is used in combustion experiments to produce a beautiful blue flame, and in studies of the properties of non-metals to image the reactions of non-metals with metals and non-metals.
