Sodium polynaphthalene formaldehyde sulfonate is used as a disintegrator/dispersant, emulsifier, and emulsion stabilizer. It is commonly found in speciality products.
In agriculture, sodium polynaphthaleneformaldehyde sulfonate is used as a dispersant and dissolver of pesticides. It is very stable even in very hard water and retains its properties at high mineralization.
In the construction industry, it is used as a superplasticizer to reduce scattering and friction in cementing processes. Superplasticizers, also known as high performance water reducers, are admixtures used to produce high-strength concrete or to lay self-compacting concrete. Superplasticizers allow a water reduction of 30% or more. Superplasticizers also slow down the bonding and hardening of concrete. Their addition can reduce the water/cement ratio in concrete or mortar without adversely affecting the workability of the mix. This enables the production of self-hardening concrete and high quality concrete. The water/cement ratio is a key factor in determining the strength and durability of concrete. Superplasticizers significantly improve the flowability and rheology of fresh concrete. The strength of concrete increases as the water/cement ratio decreases, because avoiding the addition of too much water just to maintain the better workability of fresh concrete reduces the porosity of hardened concrete, making it more resistant to compression. The addition of SP to the truck during transit, using an automated slump management system, allows the slump of fresh concrete to be maintained until unloading without compromising the quality of the concrete. It is most commonly found in water and oil well cementing applications where heat resistance, uniform distribution and lower pumping resistance are important. It can also be used as an admixture to reduce the water content of concrete. Recommended concentrations range from 0,1 to 3% of the dry weight of cement.
In textiles, dyeing, printing, naphthalene sulfonic acid polymer with formaldehyde sodium salt is used as a dispersant, smoothing agent to make the ink homogeneous. It has an excellent ability to protect the colloid (does not alter the behavior of fine particles), is non-volatile, non-foaming. Structure affinity to proteins and polyamide fibers; no affinity to cotton fibers and therefore aids the adhesion of pigments and dyes to cotton fibers.
In the manufacture of paints, sodium poly[(naphthalene formaldehyde) sulfonate] is used as a distributor of paint components, as a levelling agent in disperse paints, in the manufacture of reactive paints, in washing inks. Painted surfaces can be sanded and scrubbed.
