In cosmetics, glyceryl stearate is created from the esterification of glycerol and stearic acid. The emulsifier improves the stability of cosmetic products and increases the ability of emulsions to absorb additional ingredients such as essential oils and colors. Glyceryl stearate has a stronger moisturizing effect and is recommended as an additional emulsifier, emollient and surfactant in a wide range of cosmetic products, mainly lotions, creams, cream powders, and cleansers. Effects of glyceryl stearate on skin and health: the ingredient acts as a lubricant, giving the skin a soft feel, softening and forming a barrier to prevent dryness. There is no evidence of adverse health effects of glyceryl stearate.

It is used in the manufacture of creams, lotions, cleansers, shampoos, conditioners and shower gels, often in combination with other emulsifiers. Recommended for use in hair care cosmetics up to 25%. 3.0 - 4.0% in lotions, 4.0 - 8.0% in creams. Emulsifies: Promotes the formation of close mixtures between immiscible liquids by modifying surface tension (water and oil)

Properties:

  • Biodegradable
  • Provides better texture
  • Additional emulsifier
  • Emulsifier for (O/W) systems
  • Emulsion stabilizer
  • Made from plant/renewable sources
  • Acidity (saponification) (mg KOH/g) - 157
  • Melting point (°C) - 57
  • SE (self emulsifying) - self emulsifying

In the plastics industry, glyceryl stearate can also be used as an additive, where GMS acts as an anti-static and non-rusting agent. This is commonly used in the production of food packaging.

In the food industry, GMS is commonly used in baked goods to make the food more "flavorful". It is somewhat responsible for giving a smooth texture to whipped cream in ice cream. It is sometimes used as a stopping agent in bread.
