Magnesium stearate is a chemical compound with the formula Mg(C18H35O2)2. It is a soap composed of a salt containing two equivalents of stearate (stearic anion) and one magnesium cation (Mg2+). Magnesium stearate is a white, water-insoluble powder. It is used for its softness, insolubility in most solvents and low toxicity. It is used as a releasing agent and as a component or lubricant in the manufacture of medicines and cosmetics.

In cosmetics, magnesium stearate plays a major role in the manufacture of many beauty and wellness products. The powder acts as an effective coloring agent, volumizing agent and anti-adhesive catalyst. It can provide a silky texture and improved product quality. Magnesium stearate is widely used in very common cosmetic products such as foundations, face powder, clusters, eye shadows, eyeliners, mascara, deodorants and lipsticks. It is also used in many hair care and styling products such as hair serums, cream shampoos, pomade and many other products. It also helps to prevent emulsions from separating into oils and liquid components. Magnesium stearate increases the volume of the lipid (oil) portion of cosmetic and personal care products and reduces transparency or cloudiness. Widely used as a texturizer, opacifier and non-gelling thickener in a wide range of personal care products and colored cosmetics Acts as a film-forming and tack-reducing agent Useful as a lubricating agent for increased slip and silkiness Has mild emulsifying properties For dry products: use as is; for liquid products: add to the fatty phase (or dissolve in warm alcohol). For external use only. Its functions (INCI):

  • Pre-adhesion: helps to ensure the smoothness of solid particles and to limit their agglomeration in powder cosmetic products or solid cosmetic products.
  • Filler : Reduces the apparent density of cosmetic products.
  • Cosmetic coloring agent : tints cosmetics and/or gives color to the skin.
  • Moisturizing : Increases the water content of the skin and helps to keep it smooth and supple.

In the food industry, it is used as a relaxing agent and to prevent stickiness in dry foods. The most commonly used concentrations as an anti-stick agent are 0.25%-5%. It is used as a fabulous binder, emulsifier and thickener. This powder also acts as a powerful lubricant (anti-slip agent) to prevent foaming and stickiness. Magnesium stearate is used in a wide range of foodstuffs such as bakery powder ingredients, food supplements, chewing gum, confectionery and spices. It is used to bind sugar in hard-to-chew sweets such as mints. Magnesium stearate is a common ingredient in infant formula.

In medicine, magnesium stearate is mainly used as a filler, stabilizer and emulsifier in medicines and healthcare products. It can improve the solubility and stability of medicines, making them easier to store and use. It is also used in over-the-counter medicines as an antacid and laxative. Magnesium stearate powder is useful to prevent the most important components of capsules from clumping together. In addition, it prevents the drugs from sticking to the devices during the manufacturing process. The powder also strengthens and improves the quality, properties and viscosity of capsules and tablets.

In the coatings and paints industry, magnesium distearate can be used as a rheology control agent and as a thickener in coatings and paints. It can improve the uniformity and viscosity of coatings, providing better coating performance. Magnesium stearate can be used as an ingredient in paintwork paints in order to obtain more durable paints and to have a white base for other colors.

In the lubricant industry, magnesium stearate is widely used in the manufacture of lubricants and pastes. It has excellent lubricating properties which can reduce friction and wear and increase product life.
