Sodium lactate is most commonly found as a liquid, but can also be in powder form. It is a colorless or yellowish liquid with the characteristic faint odor of fermented milk or natural yoghurt. It is a substance with a wide range of applications and is involved in various biochemical processes.

In the food industry, sodium lactate E325 is widely used in the bread baking industry to feed the dough, resulting in a more homogeneous bread with a moister taste and better aroma. Sodium lactate is also used in frozen meat products stored in vacuum packs to prolong their shelf life and prevent drying during the refrigeration process. It is often used in caramel, marshmallows and marmalade as it prevents evaporation of water during boiling and heating. Food grade sodium lactate E325 enhances the effect of other antioxidants and acts as a relatively good antibacterial agent. Despite the similarity in name, sodium lactate itself is not chemically similar to lactose (milk sugar) and therefore should not be restricted to lactose intolerant individuals. Sodium lactate can be used as a salting agent without the use of added salt. Sodium lactate has been found to be used in meat products with reduced salt content and to maintain a certain level of saltiness. However, their use for this purpose is not widespread.

In cosmetics, sodium lactate is naturally present in the skin as a natural moisturizing factor (NMF) which is needed for natural skin hydration. It is a significantly stronger moisturizer than vegetable glycerin, where it has twice the water retention. Sodium lactate is a very effective moisturizer that helps to strengthen the skin's moisture barrier. Using sodium lactate can increase the moisture content of the skin by up to 84%. When comparing sodium lactate with other commonly used moisturizers, its water retention capacity is second only to sodium hyaluronate (hyaluronic acid). It also has a brightening effect on the skin due to the action of the lactate ion. The use of sodium lactate in soap bases results in harder, longer-lasting soap bars that are longer lasting, non-cracking and more moist. In cosmetics, sodium lactate is used as a preservative, an exfoliant (skin renewal agent) and a moisturizer. It is suitable as an ingredient in cosmetic care products for irritated, darkened skin. Gives cosmetics a light texture and removes stickiness. Prevents products from drying out (cracks in soaps, etc.)

Recommended use:

  • For use in face and body cosmetics (lotions, scrubs, shower gels, shampoos, face and body creams, handmade soaps), in ready-made products, excellent substitute for glycerin (added at the very end of the process, before bottling)
  • Recommended use: in cosmetic products - 1 to 10% by weight of the final product, as a pH-enhancer - 0.5%.
  • To be added in the final phase of cosmetic production
  • For external use only

Main INCI functions:

  • pH adjuster: stabilizes the pH of cosmetics
  • Humectant: maintains the water content of the cosmetic product both in the packaging and on the skin.
  • Keratolytic: removes dead cells of the epidermal stratum corneum.

In animal husbandry, the lactate anion [CH3CH(OH)COO-] has the important function of providing the 'raw material' for the further regeneration of bicarbonate (HCO3-), and therefore acts as a source (replacement) of bicarbonate in the event that normal production and utilization of lactic acid is impaired due to impaired lactate metabolism. The lactate anion content in the extracellular fluid is usually less than 1 mEq/l, but can reach 10 mEq/l during exercise. It is rarely measured and is therefore one of the "unmeasured anions" (the "anion gap") in the determination of plasma ionic composition. It can be used to treat livestock with acidosis, either by supplementation in the feed or directly into the bloodstream. Many products with sodium lactate can be found for the care of the skin of livestock (therapeutic ointments, disinfectants, post-milking teat wipes, pre-milking cleansers etc.). It is also used as a respiratory and acidity regulator, thus making animal feed more palatable and odorless, and thus increasing the digestibility of feed. Animals gain weight faster and produce more milk. Sodium lactate in animal nutrition is characterized by regulation of gastric pH and buffering properties (prevents severe pH variation), enhancement of proteolytic enzyme activity/improvement of pancreatic secretion, stimulation of digestive enzyme activity, stimulation of beneficial bacterial growth, reduction of survival of pathogens in the stomach/microbial population balance, and direct bacterial killing.

In cleaning industry it is used as a natural ingredient for cleaning liming surfaces, it is an antimicrobial agent that is natural and environmentally friendly. It is commonly found in organic products as an active ingredient and as an excipient.

In medicine, sodium lactate is used to treat arrhythmias caused by overdoses of class I antiarrhythmic drugs, as well as pressure-inducing sympathomimetics, which can cause hypertension. It can be administered intravenously as a source of bicarbonate to prevent or control mild to moderate metabolic acidosis in patients with limited oral intake (of sodium bicarbonate) and with oxidative processes that are not severely impaired. However, use in lactic acidosis is contraindicated.

In school experiments it is used as a raw material to study the sensory properties of food or as a raw material to determine salty aspects of taste.
