Butyl glycol (also known as BG, 2-butoxyethanol, glycol monobutyl ether and ethylene glycol monobutyl ether) is clear, colorless, and has a specific but mild odor. It is miscible with water and has the formula C₆H₁₄O₂.

In the paint industry is the main application of butyl glycol, consuming about 75% of the total BG produced. This is because it is a low-volatility solvent and can extend the drying time of coatings and improve their flow. Butyl glycol added in small quantities to paints can adjust their viscosity, thus increasing or decreasing their spreadability during painting. It is a very important component in decoupage products.

In the plastics industry, use as a solvent in 3D printing. It can be added to 3D plastics to shape the appropriate drying time and viscosity of the liquid plastic. It can also be used as a cleaning agent after the printing of objects or to change the surface properties of printed objects.

In the chemical industry, it is used as a raw material for the production of plasticizers by the 'reaction of phthalic anhydride'. It is also used as a raw material in the production of butyl glycol acetate.

In cleaning butyl glycol is used, both in petroleum-based and water-based cleaning products. It is also one of the ingredients in household chemicals to dissolve oily soils, change surface tension and prevent foaming.

In cosmetics, butyl glycol is used as a humectant and emulsifier. It is most commonly found in eye masks, moisturizing serums, shampoos and anti-ageing products. It also acts as a thickening agent, i.e. it liquefies mixtures and prevents them from clumping, separating or thickening. It also helps to dissolve fatty phase components. Maximum limits and concentrations depend on the use of the ingredient:

(a) Solvent for oxidative hair dyes: 4,0%.

(b) Solvent for non-oxidizing hair dyes: 2,0 %.

In hydraulics, 2-butoxyethanol is a component of hydraulic fluids; a component of drilling and cutting oils;.

In the petroleum industry, 2-butoxyethanol is a component of drilling stabilizers and oil film dispersants, both water-based and oil-based. BG is the main component of Corexit 9527, which is used as a dispersant in oil spill applications.
