Cocamidopropyl betaine (CAPB)- an active aqueous detergent derived from coconut oil. This surfactant is highly foaming and intensively moisturising. It is amphoteric in nature, i.e. it acts simultaneously as an anionic surfactant and as a cationic surfactant. Cationicity occurs in acidic media. At low pH CAPB is unstable and degrades as the ester is hydrolysed in acidic media.

In cosmetics, cocamidopropyl betaine is used as a secondary surfactant, which, when combined with other detergents, improves the foaming properties of cosmetic products and mitigates the skin effects of other more aggressive detergents. It is used in shampoos, bath foams, liquid hand soaps as a secondary detergent. Creates a pleasant sensation on the skin and a thicker texture in cosmetic products. Very often used as an analogue of cocamide DEA. The recommended use concentration is between 1% and 40%. It is also used as an antistatic agent in hair conditioners that do not irritate the skin. The main INCI functions are:

• Antistatic: reduces static electricity by neutralising the electrical charge on the surface
• Cleaner: helps to keep the surface clean
• Foam enhancer : improves the quality of the foam produced by increasing one or more of the following properties: volume, texture and/or stability. The foam becomes denser and more cream-like in texture.
• Hair Conditioner: makes hair easy to comb, soft and shiny and/or gives volume, lightness and shine
• Surfactant: reduces the surface tension of the cosmetic product and contributes to the even distribution of the product during use
• Viscosity control: increases or decreases the viscosity of the cosmetic. If more electrolytes (different salts) are added to the product, the viscosity increases up to a certain limit, then the product becomes fluid again and stratifies (the dissolution process).
• Skin conditioning - various: improves the appearance of dry and/or damaged skin by reducing flaking and restoring its elasticity.

In agriculture, cocamide propyl betaine is used as an inert component in pesticide formulations to increase the surface wetting effect and the penetration of active ingredients.

In metalworking, CAPB is used for surface cleaning and as a corrosion inhibitor in cleaning and polishing agents.

Gas hydrates production. CAPB is also used as a co-surfactant with Sodium dodecyl sulfate for promoting the formation of gas hydrates. CAPB, as an additive, helps to scale-up the gas hydrates' formation process
