Sodium cumene sulfonate, also known as SCS, is an anionic surfactant with hydrotropic properties. When dissolved in water, hydrotrope can increase the solubility of sparingly soluble organic substances, lower the cloud point (the temperature above which an aqueous solution of a water-soluble substance becomes cloudy) of aqueous products and reduce the viscosity of aqueous products.

In the cleaning industry, it is used as an ingredient in cleaning products or as a main component in the removal of wax, grease deposits and other organic soils. It is also used as an anticoagulant to prevent the aggregation of fine particles into larger aggregates.

In metalworking, sodium cumene sulfonate is used for the cleaning and preparation of metal surfaces because it effectively dissolves grease and prevents the aggregation of fine particles into larger particles and their deposition on the surface.

In water treatment, sodium cumene sulfonate is used to bind hydrogen sulfide (the compound that gives off the rotten egg smell). It is commonly used in waste water treatment and in oil drilling.

In cosmetics, sodium cumene sulfonate is used to increase the solubility of compounds in water, thereby improving the removal of impurities from skin and hair. It is used in the manufacture of make-up removers such as micellar water.

In agriculture, sodium cumene sulfonate is used in the manufacture of various plant protection products where the active ingredients are of fatty origin and difficult to mix with water. In this way, sodium cumene sulphonate increases the penetration of the active substances into the plant.
