Guar hydroxypropyltrimonium chloride GHPTC is an organic compound that is a water-soluble quaternary ammonium derivative of guar gum (also known as guar beans). It has a thickening effect and can be used as a thickener.

In cosmetics, guar hydroxypropyltrimonium chloride is used as an excellent conditioning agent for the skin and hair, and is particularly useful as a hair care product. Because it is positively charged or cationic, it neutralizes the negative charges on the hair strands, which cause hair to become static or tangled. Even better, it does so without weighing down the hair. With this ingredient, you can have silky, non-static hair that retains its volume. antistatic, thickening, film-forming, skin and hair conditioning. Guar hydroxypropyltrimonium chloride is commonly used as a conditioning agent in shampoo formulations. When diluted, it forms a coacervate with the anionic surfactants from the shampoo formulation and is deposited on the surface of the hair, providing conditioning in the form of reduced wet combing forces. The dilution and deposition phenomenon occurs when the system is diluted below the critical concentration of surfactant micelles in the shampoo, resulting in the formation of an insoluble coacervate. The properties of the resulting coacervate depend on various polymer properties including molecular weight and charge density, as well as surfactant composition and the presence of electrolytes. It is found in laundry detergents, hair conditioners, hair styling products and skin care products.

The quantities used depend on the thickness to be achieved. The more is added, the thicker the product. In water, these limes are cationic and hydrocolloidal. They are not affected by the ionic strength or pH of the solution, but degrade at extreme pH and temperature (i.e. pH 3 at 50 °C). GHPTCs remain stable at solution pH > 5-7. Strong acids cause hydrolysis and destroy viscosity. Strong alkalis at high concentrations also tend to reduce viscosity. Lipids are insoluble in most hydrocarbon solvents. GHPTC has a high structural viscosity. They are highly thixotropic at concentrations above 1%, with little thixotropy below 0.3%. The viscosity of guar hydroxypropyltrimonium chloride is synergistic with that of xanthan gum.

In metalworking, guar hydroxypropyltrimonium chloride is used in the quenching and tempering of steels, in the hardening process to give the steel a carbon content and to make the hardening solution stable and uniform and to reduce the formation of steam bubbles. Due to its cationic charge, GHPTC influences the movement of metal ions and the direction of movement.
