Tetrachloroethylene, known by the systematic name tetrachloroethylene or perchloroethylene and by many other names (and abbreviations such as 'perc' or 'PERC' and 'PCE'), is a chlorinated hydrocarbon with the formula Cl2C = CCl2. It is a colorless liquid widely used for dry cleaning of fabrics and is therefore sometimes referred to as 'dry cleaning fluid'.
In the cleaning industry, tetrachloroethylene is an excellent solvent for organic materials, volatile, very stable and non-flammable. It is the main solvent used in commercial and industrial dry cleaning because it is safe to use on common textiles, fibers and dyes and effectively removes fats, oils and dirt. It is also used by the textile industry as a lubricant, wool scouring agent, dye carrier, fabric size adjuster and finishing agent.
In metalworking, it is also used to degrease metal parts in the automotive and other metalworking industries, usually as a mixture with other chlorinated hydrocarbons. In many industries, including aerospace, appliance and automotive manufacturers, metal parts are degreased by vapor at various stages of production. Its high boiling point and long cleaning cycle allow the removal of difficult 'resins' such as waxes with high melting points. It is also favored in many applications due to its low vapor pressure and high vapor density, which results in lower emissions compared to other choices such as trichloroethylene.
Other uses include grease extraction, rubber dissolution, paint removal, sulfur recovery and as a carrier for silicones. Perchloroethylene is used in aerosol formulations for the automotive aftermarket, in particular for brake cleaning, as well as for clothing water repellents, stain removers and silicone lubricants. It can be used as an insulating fluid in some electrical transformers as a substitute for polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs).
