WHITE PETROLEUM JELLY (pharma grade), kg

A hydrocarbon mixture with a generic trade name, i.e. petroleum jelly, which is used for its lubricating and moisture-retaining properties and surface coating properties, including use on dry lips and dry skin.

In cosmetics, petroleum jelly is used as an ingredient in skin lotions and cosmetics to provide care and protection for different types of skin, either by reducing friction or minimising moisture loss, or by acting as a skin care agent, e.g. a pomade. It is also widely used to treat dry scalp and dandruff. By reducing moisture loss, petroleum jelly can prevent chapped hands and lips and soften nail cuticles. This property is used to provide thermal insulation: Vaseline can be used by swimmers to keep warm in the water during training, channel crossings or long ocean swims. It can prevent the face from getting cold due to the evaporation of the skin's moisture during cold weather outdoors. In the first half of the twentieth century, petroleum jelly, pure or as an ingredient, was also popular as a hair pomade. When used in a 50/50 mix with pure beeswax, it creates an effective moustache wax. Vaseline can be used to reduce friction between skin and clothing during a variety of sporting activities, for example to prevent cracks in the seat area of cyclists or the nipples of long-distance runners wearing loose-fitting jerseys, and is commonly used in the groin area of wrestlers and footballers. Vaseline is commonly used as a personal lubricant because it does not dry out like water-based lubricants and has a distinctive 'feel' that is different from KY and related methyl cellulose products. However, it is not recommended for use with condoms during sexual intercourse as it swells the latex and thus increases the likelihood of tearing. A strip of Vaseline may be used to prevent the spread of fluid. For example, it can be applied close to the hairline when using a home hair dye kit to prevent the hair dye from irritating or staining the skin. It is also used to prevent nappy rash.

In metalworking, petroleum jelly can be used to coat corrosion-sensitive items such as metal trinkets, stainless steel blades and gun barrels before storage as it is an excellent and inexpensive lubricant. It is used as an environmentally friendly underwater anti-fouling protection for powerboats and sailing yachts. It was recommended in the Porsche Owner's Manual as a preservative for light alloy (aleny) anodised Fuchs wheels, protecting them against corrosion from road salts and brake dust. "Every three months (after regular cleaning) the wheels should be coated with Vaseline".

In wood and leatherworking, it can be used to finish and protect wood, similar to a mineral oil finish. It is used to condition and protect smooth leather products such as bicycle saddles, boots, motorcyclists' clothing, and is also used to give a shine to varnished shoes (applied in a thin layer and lightly exfoliated). In the leather industry it is used as a waterproofing cream.

In the paper industry, it is used as a tack-reducing additive to printing ink to reduce the 'settling' of paper lint from whole paper stocks. It can be used as a release agent for plaster moulds and castings.

In candle making, petroleum jelly is a useful substance included in candle wax formulations. Vaseline softens the whole mixture, allows additional fragrance oil to be added to the candle and facilitates adhesion to the glass sidewall.

In pyrotechnics, petroleum jelly is mixed with a high proportion of strong inorganic chlorates as it acts as a plasticiser and fuel source. An example of this is Cheddite C, which consists of a 9:1 ratio of_KClO3to petrolatum. This mixture cannot explode without the use of a detonator. It is also used as a stabiliser in the production of Cordite rocket fuel.

In animal husbandry, petroleum jelly is used to moisten the paws of dogs. [29] It is a common ingredient in pet cat hair care products. Vaseline can be used to coat the inside walls of terrariums to prevent animals from slipping and running away.

In school experiments, petroleum jelly is used to wet non-drying modelling clays such as Plastilin as part of a mixture of hydrocarbons, including those with higher molecular weights (paraffin wax) and lower molecular weights (mineral oil).
