Disodium laureth sulfosuccinate DLS is a mild anionic surfactant that can be used as a primary or secondary surfactant, a mild cleansing agent, a hydrotrope and an exceptional moisturizer in low-irritant shampoos, hand soaps, baby shampoos, bubble baths, skin creams and lotions etc. In "sulfate-free" formulas. It is a common substance found in many "greener" or more natural formulations and is used to replace sulfates because of its non-irritating but effective properties. It is found in many shampoos and cleansing formulas and is used for degreasing, foaming and emulsification. DLS is known to be extremely gentle on skin and hair even at higher concentrations.

Benefits:

  • readily soluble in water, alcohols and glycols
  • miscible with all commonly used anionic, non-ionic and amphoteric surfactants
  • Stable in mildly acidic and alkaline pH ranges, loses activity in extreme pH ranges
  • very low skin irritation
  • readily biodegradable

In cosmetics, DLS is used as a mild anionic surfactant which can be used as a primary or secondary surfactant, a mild cleanser, a hydrotrope and an exceptional moisturizer. Due to its mildness, disodium lauryl sulfosuccinate is the optimal choice for low-irritant shampoos, hand soaps, baby shampoos, bubble baths, skin creams and lotions, and for all "sulfate-free" formulas. DLS has exceptionally gentle properties when in contact with hair, skin and mucous membranes. It produces a rich foam which can be further enhanced by the addition of foam boosters and stabilizers. It stimulates scalp cells and removes impurities without stripping hair of its natural oils. DLS has the following features:

  • Cleaning agent: helps maintain a clean surface
  • Foaming agent: traps small bubbles of air or other gases in a small volume of liquid, changing the surface tension of the liquid
  • Foaming agent: improves the quality of the foam produced by increasing one or more of the following properties: volume, texture and/or stability.
  • Hydrotrope: increases the solubility of a low water soluble material.
  • Surfactant: reduces surface tension on the cosmetic surface and contributes to the even distribution of the product during use

Concentrations used range from 2% to 20%, depending on whether it is used as a primary or secondary surfactant. For example: 10% to 20% (in face wash), 15% to 30% (shower gel, bath foam, shampoo). Maximum recommended concentration up to 40%.

In the cleaning industry, disodium laureth sulfosuccinate is used in the manufacture of surface cleaners, mild cleaners, concentrates. Due to its strong wetting properties and good emulsifying properties, it is excellent for allowing the water and the grease phase to mix, thus facilitating cleaning processes. Its high foaming properties make it ideal for use in the production of active foams. Due to its synthetic nature, it is ideal for use in cleaning products with a long shelf life, as the product is significantly more stable than its organic counterparts.

In paints and coatings, DLS is used to increase the wetting effect of the surface in order to achieve better adhesion to the surface, while at the same time facilitating the mixing of the fatty phase ingredients with the aqueous phase ingredients.

In the paper industry, it is used in paper forming to obtain better adhesion, denser structure.

In school experiments, DLS is used in surface wetting experiments, "magic milk" art experiments. In scientific research, it is used to study the permeability of cell membranes.
