Triethanolamine, or TEOA, is an organic compound with the chemical formula N(CH2CH2OH)3. It is a colorless, viscous liquid. It is both a tertiary amine and a triol. Triol is a molecule with three alcohol groups. Triethanolamine is primarily used in the manufacture of surfactants such as emulsifiers. It is a common ingredient in industrial and consumer product formulations. Triethanolamine neutralizes fatty acids, regulates and buffers pH, and solubilizes oils and other ingredients that are not fully soluble in water.

In the construction industry, triethanolamine is used as an organic additive (0,1 % by weight) in the grinding of cement clinker. It facilitates the grinding process by preventing the powder from sticking and coating the surface of the balls and the walls of the mill.

In cosmetics, TEA is the active ingredient in some ear drops used to clean earwax. It also serves as a pH balancer in a wide variety of cosmetic products, ranging from cleansing creams and milks, skin lotions, eye gels, moisturizers, shampoos, shaving foams, TEA is a relatively strong base: the pH of a 1% solution is approximately 10. The pH of TEA is around 10.5 to 10.0 and the pH of the skin is below pH 7, approximately 5.5 to 6.0. Cleansing milk-cream emulsions based on TEA are particularly good at removing make-up. Typical use levels are 0.1-1%, depending on the type of product and the desired pH value. Note: crystallizes at room temperature. For external use only. Its functions (INCI):

  • pH adjuster: Stabilizes the pH of cosmetics.
  • Emulsifying: Promotes the formation of intimate mixtures between immiscible liquids by modifying surface tension (water and oil)
  • Masking: Reduces or suppresses the odor or the main flavor of the product
  • Surfactant: reduces the surface tension of the cosmetic and contributes to the even distribution of the product during application

In holography, TEA is used to increase the sensitivity of silver halide-based holograms, as well as a swelling agent for color change holograms. The sensitivity can be increased without color change by rinsing TEA against the squeegee and drying.

In electrical engineering, TEA is now widely and very effectively used as a complexing agent in electroless circuit board coating.

In metalworking, triethanolamine, diethanolamine and aminoethylethanolamine are the main components of common organic liquids for the soldering of aluminum alloys using tin-zinc and other tin- or lead-based soft solder. Based on its chelating properties, TEA is used as a corrosion inhibitor in electroplating, metal cleaning and rust removal, as well as in lubricating and metalworking fluids.

In agriculture, triethanolamine is used as an ingredient in herbicides, where it helps to dissolve active substances that are difficult to dissolve in water and to maintain the correct pH level.

In aquaculture, TEAO is used as an algaecide or as an ingredient in algaecides because its properties prevent the growth of algae.

In the rubber and plastics industry, it is used as a vulcanization accelerator in the rubber industry, as a moisture retaining and softening agent in leather tanning, and in the production of synthetic resins, plasticisers, adhesives and sealants.
