Potassium iodide is an odorless, non-flammable, water-soluble chemical with a salty, bitter taste. It is in the form of fine white crystals and may also be transparent.

In the food industry, potassium iodide is used as a nutritional additive in animal feed and human nutrition. In humans, it is the most common additive used to "iodize" table salt (a public health measure to prevent iodine deficiency in populations with low seafood intakes). Iodized salts slowly lose iodine when exposed to excess air due to oxidation of iodide. The alkali metal iodide salt slowly oxidizes over time and exposure to excess oxygen and carbon dioxide to metal carbonate and elemental iodine, which then evaporates. Dextrose or sodium thiosulphate is often added to iodized table salt to stabilize the potassium iodide and thus reduce the loss of the volatile chemical.

In cosmetics potassium iodide is rarely found. It can be found in cosmetic products for the treatment of skin sporotrichosis and fomycosis. Potassium iodide can be found in hair dyes or masks intended to lighten the hair, and acts as a catalyst for the breakdown of pre-oxidants and the bleaching of hair. The resulting products have a relatively fast and effective hair lightening effect. In shampoos, soaps, gels it is used as a biocidal component, avoiding the use of extremely strong synthetic biocides. Its main functions INCI:

  • Antimicrobial: helps to slow down the growth of micro-organisms on the skin and prevents microbial growth.

In laboratories, potassium iodide is used in quantitative chemical analysis (known as Karl Fisher titration) to determine the moisture content of materials, in physical analysis (spectroscopy), and in qualitative analysis of foodstuffs (potassium iodide solution helps to determine the amount of starch).

In medicine, potassium iodide is an oral anti-thyroid agent used to prevent radioactive iodine from entering the thyroid gland during a nuclear accident. Potassium iodide may be used as an adjunct to other antithyroid agents in the treatment of hyperthyroidism and thyrotoxicosis and before surgery to induce thyroid involution.

In the chemical industry, the most important use of potassium iodide is mainly related to the production of aryl iodides in the Sandmeyer reaction, starting with arylamines. In turn, aryl iodides are used to attach aryl groups to other organic substances by nucleophilic substitution, with the iodide ion being the leaving group.

In photography, KI is used in combination with silver nitrate to produce silver iodide (AgI), an important chemical in film photography. The result is a photosensitive photographic emulsion.

In animal husbandry, KI is used in conjunction with elemental iodine and potassium iodate in udder care for the treatment of mastitis, inflammation and prophylactic protection against mastitis. They are among the most effective disinfectants. Potassium iodide can be found in hair products.

In school experiments, potassium iodide is known to be the most effective component in the "elephant toothpaste" experiment. Due to its properties, potassium iodide is very good at catalyzing the breakdown of hydrogen peroxide, resulting in a very rapid formation of a large volume of foam, which is like a shot upwards or a violent volcanic eruption. Other catalysts such as potassium permanganate, manganese oxide, platinum salts, etc., are slower acting, so that different pastes can be created with the appropriate catalysts, ranging from a shooting to a slow-rolling effect.
