Mineral oil or liquid paraffin is any of various colourless, odourless, light mixtures of higher alkanes obtained from mineral sources, particularly petroleum distillate. It is important to distinguish that liquid paraffin is not an automotive lubricant. Mineral oil is a clear, colourless oil composed mainly of alkanes and cycloalkanes, akin to petroleum jelly, and is extremely cleanly purified to make it suitable for more than just technical purposes.

In cosmetics, paraffin oil is used as an emollient and film-forming agent: it is occlusive and forms a film that protects the skin. Paraffin oil is a hydrocarbon derivative (obtained from petroleum or coal by synthesis). It is found in many products such as moisturisers, lip balms and make-up. Mineral oil is a common ingredient in baby lotions, cold creams, ointments and cosmetic products. It is a light, inexpensive, odourless and tasteless oil. It can be used to protect eyelashes from breaking and splitting, and in a cold cream it is also used to remove creamy make-up and temporary tattoos. The highly refined and purified mineral oil used in cosmetics and skincare products is non-comedogenic (does not clog pores). Mineral oil is used as a fertility-preserving vaginal lubricant, but liquid paraffin has been known to erode latex condoms. Its functions (INCI)

  • Antistatic: reduces static electricity by neutralising the surface electrical charge
  • Emollient: softens and smoothes the skin
  • Protects the skin: helps to prevent the skin from the damaging effects of external agents
  • Solvent : Solubilises other substances
  • Mineral oil is used as the main combustible in some types of gel scented candles because it does not give off any extraneous odour when burning and allows the aromas in the candle to be fully developed.

In veterinary medicine, mineral oil is used as a mild laxative for pets and livestock. In the poultry industry, mineral oil can also be applied to the legs of chickens infected with scaly mites on the shins, toes and webs. Mineral oil suffocates these small parasites. In beekeeping, paper wipes saturated with edible mineral oil are placed in hives to treat tracheas and other mites. It is also used in combination with a cotton swab to remove loose skin (scales) on reptiles such as lizards and snakes.

In horticulture, paraffin oil is used to spray plants to control populations of scales, aphids and other pests by suffocating them. Sprays are applied in 1% to 4% solutions in water, which is hundreds of times higher than modern synthetic insecticides. Mineral oil is correspondingly cheaper. IRAC classifies mineral oil as UNM (non-specific mechanical and physical interference). Resistance to mineral oil has never been observed.

In the electrical and mechanical industries, mineral oil is used as a non-conductive coolant or heat transfer fluid in electrical components because it is electrically non-conductive and displaces air and water. Some examples are: in transformers, where it is called transformer oil, and in high-voltage switchgear, where mineral oil is used as an insulator and a coolant to dissipate the switching arc. Liquid paraffin is used for cooling electronics, for example for cooling some custom-made computer components by immersing them in a mineral oil liquid. As mineral oil is incompressible, it is used as a hydraulic fluid in hydraulic machines and vehicles. Mineral oil is used in specialised machinery (both manufactured and domestic) to produce a thick white smoke, which is then blown into systems to find leaks and leakages.

In metal and stoneworking, it is used to polish stone, to lubricate pocket knives, or to lubricate food-handling tools that use open bearings. Mineral oil (paraffinum perliquidum) is used as a honing oil when sharpening tools (e.g. chisels) on abrasive stones in order to avoid dustiness and to obtain a smoother sharpening effect. Mineral oil can be used as an anti-corrosive agent for parts of various metals or cutting tool blades.

In the entertainment business, mineral oil is used as a low-hot flammable substance with no taste or odour (unlike kerosene or other types of oil), and is therefore used in fire show elements, 'spitting fire' numbers or a 'fire dance' number.

In domestic use, mineral oil is used as a lubricant for clocks, bicycles and nuts.
