Sodium laureth sulphate or sodium dodecyl sulfate is an organic compound that is made mainly from naturally occurring ingredients, contains no preservatives and is completely soluble even in very hard water. It has a synergistic (reinforcing) effect with non-ionic and amphoteric surfactants.

In cosmetics it is used as a highly active surfactant for the removal of grease, hardened deposits. High concentrations are used for floor and car washing; low concentrations are used for toothpaste, shampoo, shaving and cosmetic bath foam. High foaming.

In construction industry, sodium lauryl ethoxy sulfate in the manufacture of spray insulation foams. It is mixed with phosphoric acid, amide resins and sprayed through a spray gun. Its purpose is to form and hold foam. SLES is sometimes used as an alternative to ABS, but is not very common due to its lower concentration of active ingredient and its thick consistency.

In medicine, SLES has expansive properties and is therefore added to enemas as a laxative for constipation. Sodium lauryl sulphate is present in aspirin and some other water-soluble medicines.

In the energy sector, sodium lauryl sulphate has recently been used as a catalyst in gas-methane hydrate formation reactions, which, according to recent studies, can be accelerated up to 700 times.

In biochemistry, the compound is also used in the electrophoresis of polyacrylamidosols for denaturing proteins during DNA extraction. It breaks the non-covalent (hydrogen) bonds between proteins and disrupts the overall structure of the molecule.

In the dyeing industry, SLES is used as a component of dispersion systems in the formulation of paints, as a base for paints, or as a component in self-made paints, as a pigment remover, a foaming agent or a dirt remover. In other industries, it may be used as a slip-enhancing agent or as a water-washable lubricant.

In schools, SLES is used in fun experiments such as 'elephant toothpaste', 'burning foam', 'soap bubbles', 'sea of foam', etc., where it is necessary to induce foaming, keeping them stable for a longer time at different pH, temperature conditions.
