The highly active surfactant more commonly known as ABS or ALKYLBENZENSULFONIC ACID is an anionic PAM, one of the most popular ingredients in household chemicals, which causes the product to foam and gives it an amber colour. It is designed for the removal of fats, proteins, dirt of plant and animal origin. High concentrations are used in dishwashing detergents; low concentrations are used in floor and all-purpose detergents. Non-flammable, well soluble in water but poorly soluble in organic solvents. Environmentally friendly, with a biodegradability greater than 90 .

In household use alkylbenzene sulfonic acid is neutralised to alkylbenzenesulfonates (mixing the acid with caustic soda yields sodium alkylbenzenesulfonate), which are used as a component of dishwashing detergents, household cleaners. They are also included in washing powders or washing liquids.

In cosmetics, ABS acid is rarely used directly due to its acidity, but once neutralised to a more skin-friendly pH it is used as a very effective degreasing agent, an anionic PAM, and as a primary or secondary foaming agent. The main INCI functions are:

• - Cleaning: helps to maintain a clean surface
• - Foaming: collection of small air bubbles or other gases in a small volume of liquid by changing the surface tension of the liquid.
• - Surfactant: reduces the surface tension of the cosmetic and contributes to the even distribution of the product in the surface

In agriculture, LABSA is used in the spraying of crops in a wide range of applications where the aim is to both acidify the solution itself, and at the same time to provide faster and easier absorption of the sprayed liquid through the leaves, as the ABS acid reduces surface tension and increases the wetting effect. It is recommended for use in anionic mixtures or salt solutions.

In industry, it is used as a wetting agent, emulsifier for the polymerisation process, cleaning agent in the textile industry, degreasing agent in the leather processing industry, and in papermaking.

In the petroleum industry, ABS acid is used as one of the components of lubricants, which imparts washing properties to motor oil. It has the advantage of easy miscibility with petroleum products and water-based components, non-flammability and heat resistance. It also has lubricating and anti-corrosive properties.

In paint manufacturing, alkylbenzenesulfonic acid is used as an emulsifier and wetting agent, which helps to improve the distribution of the paint on the surface and to keep the paint solid longer.

In the construction industry, ABS is used in the production of spray insulation foams. It is mixed with phosphoric acid, amide resins and sprayed through a spray gun. Its purpose is to form and hold foam. It can be accepted either as a single component or as a mixture with phosphoric acid. A cheaper alternative is to use the pure component alone.

In schools, ABS acid is used in foaming experiments such as "elephant toothpaste", "burning foam", "soap bubbles", "sea of foam", etc,
