Polyaluminium chloride (PAC) has excellent antiperspirant properties and is very effective in clarifying both swimming pool and wastewater waters. PAC is also known as a flocculant, which is very effective at trapping fine particles in the water and allowing them to be filtered out.

In water treatment, polyaluminium chloride is used in swimming pools to remove nano-sized particles. Due to their small size, these particles have a very low settling velocity and a rather poor filterability. Conventional sand filters or sedimentation processes are unable to remove these particles, so the addition of polyaluminium chloride, which has a different charge to that of the nanoparticles, forms floccules, i.e. it clumps them together into larger aggregates which, due to their weight, settle on the bottom and/or become easily filtered. The maximum recommended rate is 250 g/m3, although 50-150 g/m3 is commonly found. The pH of the water is very important for the effectiveness of the flocculant. If the pH is higher than 8, the flocculants' effect becomes very weak and effectively stops when the pH reaches 10. The optimum operating pH is up to 7.

In cosmetics, polyaluminium chloride is used as an ingredient in antiperspirants to inhibit perspiration and the growth of bacteria that cause the unpleasant odor of sweat. Concentrations of polyaluminium chloride in antiperspirants reach up to 25%.

In schools polyaluminium chloride is used in tests and experiments to demonstrate coagulation and flocculation processes.

In agriculture, polyaluminium chloride is used for slurry treatment and condensation, e.g. for the separation of pig slurry from slurry into solid and liquid phases for odor control in the surroundings.
