A white crystalline salt, an inorganic compound with the formula NH₄Cl, very soluble in water. Solutions of ammonium chloride are slightly acidic. Sal ammonia is the name given to the natural, mineralogical form of ammonium chloride. The mineral is usually formed by the condensation of coal gas from the combustion of coal refuse. It is also found in some types of volcanic vents. It is commonly used for fertilisers and flavourings in some types of liquorice. The main use of ammonium chloride is as a source of nitrogen in fertilisers such as chlorammonium phosphate. The main agricultural crops fertilised by this process are rice and wheat in Asia.

In metalworking. Ammonium chloride is used as a cleaning flux in the production of metals to be tin-plated, galvanised or soldered. When fed into the stream, it cleans the surface of the workpieces by reacting with the metal oxides on the surface to form a volatile metal chloride.

In medicine, ammonium chloride is used in cough suppressants. It has an irritating effect on the bronchial mucosa, which produces excess airway fluid, making it easier to expectorate. Ammonium salts irritate the stomach lining and can cause nausea and vomiting. Ammonium chloride is used as a systemic acidifying agent in the treatment of severe metabolic alkalosis, in the diagnosis of distal renal tubular acidosis, in the maintenance of an acidic urine pH, and in the treatment of certain urinary tract disorders.

In the food industry, ammonium chloride, used as food additive E, number E510, working as a yeast nutrient in bread making and as an acidity regulator. It is a feed additive for cattle and a component of the nutrient medium for yeast and many micro-organisms.

In the laboratory, ammonium chloride is used to achieve low temperatures in cooling baths. Ammonium chloride solutions with ammonia are used as buffers, including ACK (ammonium chloride and potassium) lysis buffer.

In cosmetic manufacturing, ammonium chloride is used as a buffer to maintain a uniform pH throughout the life of the product.
