Ammonium heptamolybdate is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula (NH4)6Mo7O24, usually formed as tetrahydrate. It is a colourless solid often referred to as ammonium paramolybdate or simply as ammonium molybdate, although 'ammonium molybdate' may also refer to ammonium orthomolybdate, (NH4)2MoO4 and several other compounds. Potassium heptamolybdate, also obtained as tetrahydrate, is very similar to the ammonium salt.
In the metalworking industry it is used for bonding metals, electroplating.
In agriculture it is used as a source of trace elements for cereals. It is used at the rate of 0,1-2,0 kg/ha of ammonium molybdate at sowing time or by spraying the seeds with 10-20 g of ammonium heptamolybdate per 25 kg of seed. For spraying, a 0,1 - 0,3 % solution of ammonium heptamolybdate shall be applied 2-3 times with an interval of 10 days between sprays. Recommended rates:
For beans: 100-200 g/ha
Cereals: 100-200 g/ha
Rapeseed: 100-200 g/ha
Vegetables: 100-200 g/ha
Main functions in the soil:
- Stimulates the activity of micro-organisms in the soil
- Particularly important in bean crops for the activity of tuber bacteria
- Very rapidly absorbed
- Particularly suitable for acid soils where there is a deficiency of molybdenum
- Highest concentration on the market in powder form
In the chemical industry for the preparation of dehydrogenation and desulphurisation catalysts
In analytical applications, ammonium heptamolybdate is used as an analytical reagent for the determination of phosphates, silicates, arsenates and lead in aqueous solution (e.g. pigments, river water, seawater, etc.) Detection of recreational drugs as a component of the Freud's reagent. Freud's reagent is obtained in the form of 0,5g. Ammonium heptamolybdate is dissolved in hot concentrated (96-98%) sulphuric acid. The resulting Freud's solution is dropped onto the test substance and the colour formation observed.
