Phosphoric acid is a weak inorganic acid with the chemical formula H3PO4. It is a non-toxic acid that is 100% solid at room temperature and normal pressure (1 atm).

In the food industry, phosphoric acid is used as a food additive under the E number E338. The acid is used to acidify foods and beverages and jams, giving them a sharp or sour taste. In beer or wine production, it is used to adjust the pH (acidity), and in the washing of fermentation/maturation vessels in order to descale beer/wine. Phosphoric acid salts such as monocalcium phosphate are used as tanning agents.

In metalworking, phosphoric acid is used to remove rust without damaging iron surfaces. The acid can be applied directly to rusting iron, steel tools or other surfaces. Liquid acid can be used, but acid gel is the most common. Several cleanings may be necessary to remove all rust. It can also be used for electrochemical cleaning of welds. Phosphoric acid can be used in the treatment of iron surfaces to passivate them (phosphating process). It can be used as a flux in the soldering process. Phosphoric acid is used as a solution or one of the main components of a solution in the anodising process. In copper processing, as an electrolyte in the copper electropolishing process, to remove chips.

In cosmetics, phosphoric acid is used to adjust pH, stabilize the product and bind metal ions. Main functions of INCIs:

  •     pH regulator: stabilizes the pH in cosmetic products

In medicine, phosphoric acid is used in dentistry and orthodontics as an etching solution to clean and soften the surface of the tooth before it is prepared. Phosphoric acid is also a component of over-the-counter anti-nausea drugs, which are also high in sugar (glucose and fructose). "The orthophosphoric acid in cola-type soft drinks helps regulate the digestive process. This acid is also used in many teeth whiteners.

In agriculture, phosphoric acid is used as a pH adjuster in irrigation water and thus as a source of phosphorus. It is particularly suitable for plants that like acidic soils (rosehips, raspberries, strawberries, etc.). It can also be used during flowering as an additional source of phosphorus.

In fuel production, phosphoric acid is used as an electrolyte in HOH gas generators. The quantities used are 1-2 drops per litre of water.

In the chemical industry, phosphoric acid can be used as a catalyst for the production of alcohols from olefins by the hydration method. Chemical oxidant in the production of activated carbon.

In the cleaning industry, phosphoric acid is used as a cleaning agent for cleaning post-construction masonry surfaces. In household cleaners it is used as a lime scale remover.

In construction industry phosphoric acid is used for sprayable insulation foam. Mixing amidic resins or polyols (for structure formation) with ABS acid (for making foam) and phosphoric acid (catalyst for hardening) it is received fast hardening sprayable insulation foam, which can close all holes in walls and roof.
