Zinc chloride is the name of the chemical compound with the formula ZnCl2 and its hydrates. Zinc chlorides, of which there are nine known crystalline forms, are colorless or white and are highly soluble in water. This white salt is extremely hygroscopic.
In metalworking, zinc chloride is used as a flux which, due to zinc's amphoteric nature, reacts with metal oxides (MO) to form metal complex derivatives (MZnOCl2), thus revealing a clean metal surface. Fluxes with ZnCl2 as the active ingredient are sometimes referred to as "tin liquid".
In the textile and paper industry, concentrated aqueous solutions of zinc chloride (more than 64 % w/w zinc chloride in water) have a dissolving effect on starch, silk and cellulose. Because of its affinity for these substances, ZnCl2 is used as a flame retardant, i.e. a fire retardant. Vulcanized paper fibers are produced by soaking paper in concentrated zinc chloride.
In woodworking, dilute aqueous zinc chloride has been used as a disinfectant under the name 'Burnett's Disinfectant Liquid'. From 1839 Sir William Burnett promoted its use as a disinfectant and wood preservative. Burnett had some commercial success with his eponymous liquid. However, after his death, its use was largely replaced by other patented products.
In agriculture, zinc chloride is used as a fertilizer. Zinc chloride increases protein synthesis and promotes plant growth, and increases the resistance of plants to drought, heat and frost. Zinc deficiency can spoil the expected yields, as almost all plants, especially cereals, are sensitive to it. Deficiency of zinc impairs plant respiration and protein synthesis. It is important that fertilized plants are not sensitive to chlorine to prevent plant chlorosis. It can also be used as a herbicide to inhibit the growth of moulds and mildews.
Other uses: ninhydrin reacts with amino acids and amines to form the colored compound Ruhemann's Purple (RP). Spraying with zinc chloride solution produces a 1:1 complex RP: ZnCl(H2O)2, which is more easily detected because it fluoresces more intensely than RP. Can be used as a growth regulator for moss on roofs.
