PMA glycol ether has the lowest viscosity of the entire line of glycol ethers and provides excellent viscosity reduction. The remaining OH group in the glycol ether molecule is covered by an acetate group, which reduces its polarity and solvent viscosity. The acetate group also removes the reactive hydrogen from the OH group present in other glycol ethers; thus, PMA glycol ether is an excellent solvent of choice for urethanes and other proton sensitive systems. PMA glycol ether is a relatively fast-evaporating glycol ether that sets the standard for solvent performance in high-solids systems. It provides excellent active solubility for a wide variety of resin types including acrylics, epoxies, alkyds, polyesters and many others.

In the paint industry, propylene glycol methyl ether acetate is used as a coupling agent and flow enhancer for water-based paints. Active solvent for solvent-based coatings, active solvent for solvent-based screen printing inks, aprotic solvent in coating systems where OH reactivity is undesirable (e.g. PU/isocyanate and epoxy). PGMEA added in small quantities to the ink can adjust its viscosity, thereby increasing or decreasing its spread on the surface during painting. It is used for coating systems composed of higher levels of fatty components, e.g. including cellulose acetate butyrate, nitrocellulose, epoxy resins, acrylic copolymers and phenoxy resins. Due to its slow evaporation rate and good solvent activity, PM acetate is an effective retarding solvent for use in varnishes, thinners and baking enamels. It is available as a urethane type solvent.

In the plastics industry it is used as a solvent in 3D printing. It can be added to 3D plastics to create the appropriate drying time and viscosity of the liquid plastic. It can also be used as a cleaning agent after printing objects or to modify the surface properties of printed objects, e.g. to soften the surface so that molded plastic layers are less visible or to make sharp edges of parts softer.

In cleaning, PMA is used in both petroleum-based and water-based cleaning agents. It is also one of the ingredients in household chemicals to dissolve oily soils, to change surface tension and to prevent product foaming. In high concentration systems, PMA is used as a fluidizing agent to keep the products liquid and prevent them from thickening. It has the advantage over butyl glycol of having a faint, fruity odor, so that it does not distort odors or irritate the respiratory tract, even when used in higher concentrations.

In cosmetics, PGMEA is used as a solvent in nail polishes. It also acts as a thickening agent, i.e. it liquefies mixtures and prevents them from layering, separating or thickening. It also helps to dissolve fatty phase components. It is a medium to slow evaporating solvent. It has a solubility of 20% in water and is ideal as a coupling agent in many solvent systems where components of fatty (hydrophobic) origin predominate.

In electronics, PGMEA is the most commonly used solvent in the semiconductor industry, particularly for the application of surface adhesives such as bis(trimethylsilyl)amine (HMDS) on silicon wafers. This compound is often the most common airborne molecular contaminant (AMC) in semiconductor cleanrooms, as it evaporates into ambient air.

In the construction industry, propylene glycol methyl ether acetate is used in the manufacture of construction chemicals such as silicones, sealants, construction cleaners, paints, mastics, etc. The main function of PMA is as a solvent, binder and drying regulator.
