Etidronic acid or 1-hydroxyethane 1,1-diphosphonic acid (HEDP) is a biphosphonate used in detergents, water purification, cosmetics, and pharmaceutical treatments. Etidronic acid is a chelating agent and can be used to bind or to some extent neutralize the effects of substances in wastewater (e.g. calcium, iron or other metal ions) that can contaminate groundwater supplies. The quantities used depend on the objective to be achieved: 1-10 mg/l as a lime scale inhibitor, 10-50 mg/l as a corrosion inhibitor and 1000-2000 mg/l as a detergent.

In metalworking it is used for its corrosion inhibiting properties and can therefore be used to protect unalloyed steel against corrosion. It can also be used to retard the hydrolysis or oxidation of fatty acids.

In washing and cleaning industry, HEDP and its salts are added to detergents and other cleaning agents to mitigate or completely neutralize the effects of hard water. It is also used in peroxide bleaching to prevent peroxide degradation due to the action of transition metals. Can be found in peroxide-based detergents or disinfectants such as peracetic acid.

In cosmetics, it is used as a component of cosmetic products to inhibit radical formation, as a stabilizing agent in emulsions and as a viscosity control agent. Etidronic acid is used as a complexone in cosmetics. It forms complexes with calcium, arsenic, iron and other metal ions to neutralize them. This makes it possible to control the use of slightly "hard" water, which, for example, can interfere with the surfactants in the product. Chelators are often used in water softeners. This molecule does not pose a problem for human health. Main function of INCI:

  • Chelating: Reacts and forms complexes with metal ions which may affect the stability and/or appearance of cosmetic products.

In swimming pools it is used as an additive in pool cleaning preparations. Here it acts as an inhibitor that prevents metal ions from leaving the solution and settling on pool surfaces.

In construction industry, etidronic acid is used as an additive to increase fire resistance. It can be used both in concrete products and in the treatment of structural timber to increase the fire resistance class. In some cases it can be used as a component of fibers to reduce their flammability.
