Potassium sulfate is also known as potash sulfate or arcanite. It is an inorganic compound with the formula K2SO4. It is a white, water-soluble crystal that is commonly used as a fertiliser to enrich plants with potassium and sulphur elements.

In horticulture and agriculture, potassium sulfate is used as a fertiliser that does not contain chlorides, which can be dangerous to some plants or cereals. Cereal crops or horticultural plants that are less sensitive to chlorides may have a need for potassium sulphate fertilisation if the irrigation water has a high chloride content, i.e. if it is watered with borehole (well) water rather than with water from surface water bodies. Potassium sulfate is intended for use as a base fertiliser in combination with phosphorus and nitrogen fertilisers. Potassium sulfate powder is highly soluble in water and is usually applied to the soil as a liquid or by spraying and transferring potassium to the plants through the leaves. The correct rate should be set when spraying, as over-spraying can cause leaf scorch. The recommended rate is about 1 kg of potassium sulphate fertiliser per 10 litres of water. Many plants also benefit from the sulphur in the fertiliser. Each year, plants use readily available potassium from the soil. To get a rich and healthy harvest, potassium needs to be returned to the soil each year. The rate of potassium oxide (K2O) in the soil should be between 80 and 120 kg/ha. However, if the farm grows more productive vegetables, the plants can take up to 200 - 300 kg/ha of potassium from the soil. The amount of potassium in the soil can be ascertained by soil testing. In the glass industry, potassium sulfate is used in the manufacture of glass, as one of the ingredients in the production of the main raw material.

In pyrotechnics, potassium sulfate is used in the manufacture of artillery shells to reduce the size of the flame at the time of firing. Potassium sulfate reduces the overpressure of the explosion, the size of the combustion flame and the amount of recoil. In some cases potassium sulfate may be used in combination with potassium nitrate to produce a violet flame.

In cosmetics, potassium sulfate is used as a thickening agent to make face masks stickier and thicker. Potassium sulphate has a higher stickiness than sodium chloride. Its functions (INCI):

  • Viscosity controlling : Increases or decreases the viscosity of cosmetics

In the cleaning industry, potassium sulfate is used as a conductivity enhancer in anti-static products.
