Talc is used in many industries, including papermaking, plastics, paints and coatings (e.g. metal moulds), rubber, food, electrical cables, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics and ceramics. It is often used for laboratory bench tops and electrical switchboard surfaces due to its resistance to heat, electricity and acids. Finely ground talc is used as a cosmetic (talcum powder), as a lubricant and as a filler in papermaking. It is used to coat inner tubes and rubber gloves during production to prevent surfaces from sticking.

In the food industry, talc is used as a food additive or in pharmaceutical products as a glidant. In the European Union, the additive number is E554. Talc can be used in the treatment of white rice as a polishing agent in the polishing stage. It has the following properties:

  • Anti-sticking and anti-caking: our talc has hydrophobic, organophilic and plating properties, making it an excellent release agent for sticky foods that tend to stick together. The smooth and flat lamellae of talc cover each particle and help it flow freely. Relatively water-repellent, talc particles form a barrier when enveloping food particles, reducing evaporation and moisture absorption in the product mass.
  • Filler and carrier: as a soft, harmless and organophilic material, talc is approved as a filler and carrier in food supplements such as vitamin tablets.
  • Surface finishing and texture agent: naturally soft and flat, our talc is also an effective surface finishing and texture agent in foods such as confectionery, processed cheese, rice, processed meat and spices.

In resin applications, talc is used to thicken polyester, vinyl ester and epoxy resins. It is also used in the production of artificial stone and putty. Talc reduces the shrinkage of the resin during curing and improves the grinding properties of putty, but reduces its resistance to hydrolysis. Talkas is asbestos and quartz free. Talc is used for the modification of these properties:

  • Powdered polyester and epoxy resin filler
  • Reduction of shrinkage of resin systems
  • Improvement of some mechanical properties
  • Thickening of resins

In cosmetics, talc is a mineral powder widely used for blush, face powder or eye shadow, and is used to prepare the skin for depilation with hot wax and wax film, sugar, and during and after these procedures. It does not contain zinc oxide and is therefore non-irritating to the skin. It is also used on the skin as a moisture absorbent, so it is used to keep the baby's bottom dry. A cream or balm with talc reduces the sensation of grease. Key INCI Functions:

  • Abrasive: removes substances from the surface of the body, helps clean teeth and improves shine.
  • Absorbent: Absorbs water (or oil) in dissolved or fine form
  • Non-stick: Helps to ensure the smoothness of solid particles and to limit their accumulation in powder cosmetic products or solid cosmetics.
  • Volume: reduces the apparent density of cosmetics.
  • Opacity: reduces the transparency or translucency of cosmetics
  • Skin protection: helps to prevent harmful effects of external agents on the skin
  • Slip modifier: improves the flow properties of other ingredients.
  • Slip modifiers do not react chemically with the substance(s) to which they are added.

In ceramics, magnesium hydrosilicate (talc), a reinforcing agent for the ceramic comb, neutralises small cracks and, when used in stoneware, increases thermal shock resistance. Can be used in the production of opaque and matt glazes. Talc is widely used in the ceramics industry for the production of both shells and glazes. In low-fired artwork shells, it adds whiteness and increases thermal expansion to prevent cracking. In stoneware, a small percentage of talc is used to break down the body, thus improving strength and glazing. It is a source of MgO in high-temperature glazes (to control the melting point). It is also used as a measuring agent in clay glazes and can be used to produce magnesia stains at high temperatures.

In medicine, talc is used as a pleurodesis agent to prevent recurrent pleural effusion or pneumothorax. Talc is sometimes used as an adulterant in illicit heroin to increase its volume and weight, thereby increasing its street value. When administered intravenously, it can cause pulmonary talcosis, a granulomatous pneumonia.

In the lubricant industry, talc is one of the oldest known solid lubricants due to its low shear strength. Talc is also used to a limited extent as a friction reducing additive in lubricating oils.

In construction, talc is used in the manufacture of materials that are widely used in building interiors, such as base paints in wall coatings.
