Cetrimonium chloride is a long-chain quaternary ammonium surfactant often found as a topical antiseptic and surfactant.

In cosmetics, cetrimonium chloride is used in hair care products. Cetrimonium chloride is a quaternary ammonium used in cosmetics for its antistatic properties. It is a cationic surfactant and therefore dissipates water and oil, thus promoting a soft and pleasant consistency. This ingredient is often used in hair care products instead of, and sometimes in combination with, silicones. It can also be used as a preservative. Long-chain quaternary ammonium surfactants such as cetyltrimethylammonium chloride (CTAC) are usually combined with long-chain fatty alcohols such as stearyl alcohols in hair conditioners and shampoos. The triple system of surfactant, fatty alcohol and water results in a lamellar structure forming a percolation network from which the gel is formed. Commonly found in the following products: hair conditioners, skin conditioning creams, shampoos, antiseptics, part of a preservative system. Its functions (INCI):

  • Antimicrobial: helps to slow the growth of micro-organisms against the skin and neutralise microbial growth.
  • Antistatic: reduces static electricity by neutralising surface electricity
  • Emulsifier: promotes the formation of immiscible liquid mixtures by changing the interfacial tension (water and oil).
  • Preservative: inhibits the development of micro-organisms in cosmetic products.

In the cleaning industry, cetrimonium chloride is used as an antistatic agent. It is commonly found in plastic cleaners and carpet cleaners, not only to clean carpets but also to make them soft and to eliminate unpleasant odours.

In the paint industry, cetyltrimethylammonium chloride is used as a binder in paints, adhesives or coatings. Its emulsifying properties make it an excellent binding agent for the components in the paint, while its surfactant properties help the product itself to spread and adhere better to the surface. The disinfectant properties allow coatings to survive longer in the presence of mould or fungi.

In the construction industry, cetrimonium chloride can be found in the following products: adhesives and sealants, fillers, putties, plasters, plasters, modelling clays, polymers, and other products. Due to its versatile properties, this substance significantly improves the application and performance of products.

In veterinary medicine, cetrimonium chloride is used as an ingredient in various veterinary preparations for the treatment of fungal diseases of hooves and horns, for the disinfection of animal housing, and for the treatment of certain skin diseases.

In the textile industry, CTAC is used as a fixative, conditioner and biocide during the manufacturing process. Due to its low toxicity, cetrimonium chloride is more suitable for use compared to BAC or DDAC analogues.
