Nickel (II) sulfate, or simply nickel sulfate, is an inorganic compound with the formula NiSO4-(H2O). This highly soluble blue-green salt is a common source of Ni2+ ions for electroplating.

Catalysis: Nickel sulfate is used as a catalyst in chemical reactions, particularly in the synthesis of organic compounds. It helps to facilitate and accelerate various chemical transformations. Aqueous solutions of nickel sulfate react with sodium carbonate to precipitate nickel carbonate, which is a nickel-based catalyst.

Electroplating: Nickel sulfate is a key component of the electroplating process. It is used to coat the surface of objects such as metal components and automotive parts with a nickel layer. Nickel electroplating provides corrosion resistance, durability and an attractive finish.

Battery production: Nickel sulfate is used in the production of nickel-cadmium (NiCd) and nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) batteries. These rechargeable batteries are commonly used in portable electronic devices, cordless power tools and other applications.

Chemical industry: Nickel sufate is a precursor to other nickel compounds used in the chemical industry. It is used in the production of nickel-based chemicals including nickel carbonate and nickel oxide.

Agriculture: In agriculture, nickel sulfate is sometimes used as a trace element in fertilizers to provide essential nickel to plants. Although plants only need small amounts of nickel, the amount of nickel they need is essential for their growth and development.

Textile industry: Nickel sulfate can be used in textile dyeing and printing processes as a filler to help improve the adhesion of dyes to fabrics.

Wood preservation: Similar to other nickel compounds, nickel sulfate can be used to treat wood to protect it from rotting and insect infestation, thereby extending the life of wood products.

Analytical chemistry: It is used in analytical chemistry as a reagent for a variety of tests and analyses, including the detection of certain ions and compounds.

Laboratory research: Nickel sulfate is used in a variety of laboratory experiments and chemical research projects as a source of nickel ions or as a reagent for chemical reactions. Columns used in biochemistry and molecular biology for the useful labeling of polyhistidines are regenerated with nickel sulfate. Aqueous solutions of NiSO4-6H2O and related hydrates react with ammonia to give [Ni(NH3)6]SO4 and with ethylenediamine to give [Ni(H2NCH2CH2NH2)3]SO4. The latter is sometimes used as a calibrator in magnetic susceptibility measurements as it does not tend to hydrate.

Photography: Historically, nickel sulfate has been used in some photographic processes, although its use has largely declined with the advent of digital photography.

In metalworking, nickel sulfate is used in the production of metal patinas for the blackening of zinc and brass. As a reducing agent for steel surfaces, imparting a nickel coating to the surface.

In experiments, nickel sulfate is used to grow crystals. It produces regularly shaped bluish-green translucent crystals. Their difference with copper sulfate crystals is their light transmission, i.e. they are transparent and have an electric greenish tint.
