Calcium nitrate, also known as Norwegian nitrate, is an inorganic compound with the formula Ca(NO3)2.

In wastewater management, calcium nitrate is used to condition wastewater in order to prevent the formation and spread of odors. Wastewater conditioning is based on the formation of anoxic biota in the wastewater system. In the presence of nitrate, sulphate metabolism stops, resulting in no hydrogen sulfide formation. In addition, readily degradable organic matter is consumed, which might otherwise lead to anaerobic conditions downstream, including the emission of odors themselves. This concept also applies to the treatment of excess sludge.

In agriculture, calcium nitrate 50% liquid is a pure and highly concentrated liquid calcium fertilizer that contains no ammonium and is therefore ideal for soilless cultivation. The product is a clear, stable solution and is recommended from early spring until fruit set and during fruit development. The high calcium content improves cell wall strength. The presence of nitrogen has a positive effect on the uptake of calcium by the plant. The nitrogen in calcium nitrate is fully available to the plant and ensures a rapid and predictable growth response. Calcium helps to reduce plant disorders such as bitter pitting of apples, blossom end rot of tomatoes and peppers, hollow hearts of greens and helps to reduce tip burn of lettuce. Calcium is an essential nutrient for the development of all plant tissues, and adequate supply and uptake ensures longer post-harvest storage of all orchard fruits.

  • It is particularly suitable for greenhouse and foliar fertilization.
  • Low in heavy metals
  • Low in sodium and chloride
  • Low crystallization temperature
  • Easy to handle and use

Calcium nitrate is also used to control certain plant diseases. For example, a dilute spray of calcium nitrate (and calcium chloride) is used to control bitter pit and cork blight in apple trees.

In construction industry calcium nitrate is used in concrete admixtures to accelerate setting in construction. The use of the additive in concrete production is based on two effects. Calcium ions accelerate the formation of calcium hydroxide, and hence curing and hardening. This effect is also used in winter concrete admixtures for use at sub-zero temperatures, as well as in some compound plasticizers. Nitrate ions lead to the formation of iron hydroxide, the protective layer of which reduces the corrosion of concrete reinforcement. The use of calcium nitrate in winter is preferable to the use of calcium chloride as it does not corrode the reinforcement.

In the rubber industry, calcium nitrate is a very common coagulant in latex production, especially in dipping processes. Dissolved calcium nitrate is part of the immersion bath solution. The warm moulder is immersed in the coagulating liquid and a thin film of the immersion liquid remains on the moulder. When you now dip the former into the latex, the calcium nitrate will break the stabilization of the latex solution and the latex will coagulate on the former.

In industry, calcium nitrate is used as a thickener in detergents and cosmetic products. Mixtures containing high levels of surfactants are easily thickened by the addition of calcium nitrate. It is much more effective in thickening than sodium chloride because the calcium and nitrate ions are able to form more covalent bonds, thus modifying the viscosity better.
