It is a white salt with the chemical formula K2CO3. It is freely soluble in water but insoluble in ethanol. The aqueous solution has strong alkaline properties. It can be produced by the absorption of carbon dioxide by potassium hydroxide. Potassium carbonate is used in the manufacture of soap and glass.

In agriculture, potassium carbonate is used as a source of potassium in fertilizers. It accelerates plant growth. It also helps retain water in the soil. The application of this chemical compound strengthens the roots and stems of plants.

In the textile industry It is used as a bleaching agent. It is also widely used to wash and dye wool and for tanning and washing leather products.

In wine production, potassium carbonate is used as a drying agent (to remove water from the air) and to reduce acidity in the production of mead or wine.

In cosmetics, potassium carbonate is used as a milder analogue of sodium hydroxide in the manufacture of soaps. The resulting soaps are milder than sodium soaps. It is also possible to obtain a more liquid soap base using potash caustic. Key INCI function:

  • pH adjuster: Stabilizes the pH of cosmetics

In the glass industry, it is used for the glazing of ceramic pots, to obtain color and transparency of glass.

In the food industry, it is used as a food additive to regulate acidity, as a stabilizer or flavor enhancer, and in combination with sodium carbonate to produce the yellow color of noodles and the fluffiness of Chinese noodles and dishes.

In water purification, it is used as a water softening agent;

In fire extinguishing systems, used as a condensed aerosol in fire extinguishers or as a wood preservative/retardant. The impregnation of wood with potassium carbonate produces a porous structure on the surface as it heats up, which increases the wood's ignition temperature to 900C compared to the natural ignition temperature of wood.

In the metalworking industry, potassium carbonate is used as a component of welding fluxes. It is commonly used for arc welding, e.g. as a component of electrode coatings.

In animal husbandry, potassium carbonate is used as an ingredient in animal feed to enrich the feed with potassium and at the same time reduce the acidity of the feed.
