Caprylic and caprylyl triglyceride, also known as caprylic and caprylic acid glycerol ester or MCT (Medium Chain Trygliceride), is a mixed fatty acid compound. It is a colourless liquid used in food-related applications such as food dyes, food lubricants. It can be used as a coalescing agent in water-based paints. Due to its lubricating properties it is used in metalworking fluids, hydraulic fluids and lubricants. In these applications it is used as a base oil. Caprylic/caprylic triglyceride is obtained from vegetable oil extracted from coconuts which is hydrogenated and hydrolysed. It is used in cosmetics in many products and make-up products. It is also often found in homemade cosmetics for light creams, dry oils, and post-tanning skin care. It is also used as a base for diluting essential or base oils and for making plant extracts. It is widely used for its dispersive properties and is suitable for the most sensitive skin. It is authorised for use in organic products.

In cosmetics, MCT oil is used in aromatherapy and massage, its easy-to-use liquid form and mild scent make it an ideal carrier for essential oils. It is popular with massage therapists due to its fast-absorbing, non-fatty and non-purulent properties. MCT oil is used in skin care, hair care and cosmetic products and is a light and very stable moisturising base with neutral sensory properties (odour and colour), thus helping to provide a positive experience for consumers. For manufacturers wishing to avoid the "heavy" or "nutty" odours associated with virgin or unprocessed vegetable oils, MCT oil is highly desirable due to its very light characteristic odour and it is a good alternative to mineral oil. In addition, MCT oil, due to its low-fat, more powdery texture, can improve the consistency of the emulsion, which can improve the consumer's perception of its performance and is well suited for rinse-off products. MCT oil is also ideal for volumising hair care products, as heavier oils often weigh down the hair and lose their volumising effect. Unlike coconut oil, MCT oil is suitable for all skin types and can be used in products such as oil cleansing. Beneficial physical and chemical properties of MCT oil:

  • colourless or very pale yellow appearance
  • emits a mild, specific odour
  • remains liquid at room temperature
  • Low viscosity and light texture
  • Absorbs quickly into the skin
  • Non-greasy and non-staining
  • Excellent thermal stability (can be heated or frozen)
  • Excellent oxidative stability, extending product lifetime
  • Versatile solvent as it is soluble not only in acids and alcohols but also in lipids and oils

For long-lasting hydration and softness, a few drops of MCT oil can be applied to the face and neck with clean fingertips or a cotton pad. For normal, dry or mature skin, this oil can be used alone as a soothing serum or as a light facial oil which, once absorbed, becomes an effective make-up base. MCT oil is also ideal for cleansing oil as it gently removes residual impurities and excess oil without drying the skin or clogging pores. When used on the body, MCT oil acts as a moisturising body oil that leaves the skin silky smooth and calm after shaving. It is best used after a bath or shower to lock in moisture and keep the skin hydrated. When used on the hair, MCT oil can quickly change the appearance of dry, unhealthy hair by adding shine and moisture; those with dry, flaky scalps may benefit from a scalp and hair massage with this rejuvenating oil. The MCT oil absorbs quickly and can be carried with you and applied to prevent dryness or irritation. The lips and nails are also areas that can be beautified with the nourishing properties of MCT oil. To moisturise, apply a few drops of MCT oil to make your lips even shinier and softer. Its functions (INCI):

  • Masking : Reduces or suppresses the odour or main flavour of the product
  • Solvent : Dissolves other substances
  • Perfume : Used in the manufacture of perfumes and aromatic raw materials
  • Skin conditioner - occlusive : prevents evaporation of water from the skin surface. Occlusive substances are usually lipids that tend to remain on the surface of the skin and thus increase the water content of the skin.

The solvent MCT oil is used to dilute and dissolve fatty derivatives. It is an excellent dissolver of odours, essential oils, oil derivatives, waxes and other hydrophobic derivatives. Due to its low viscosity and density, it is ideal as a base for electrically non-conductive liquids.

In the lubricant industry, MCT oil is used as a base for the production of liquid, low viscosity lubricating fluids suitable for the food industry. It is also excellent as a drilling fluid or as a coolant in electronics. MCT can be found in brake fluids as one of the components allowing better performance than conventional components.

In nutrition and medicine, MCT oil is used as a more potent, easily absorbed and rapidly digestible dietary product that can benefit individuals with nutritional or lipid metabolism disorders. Unlike other fats, MCTs have an unconventional metabolic pathway. They enter the liver directly through the portal vein, where they undergo oxidation and eventually form ketones. This rapid process, which bypasses the natural, longer digestive process, is believed to be very beneficial for energy, fitness and weight loss.

In the cleaning industry, MCT oil is used to clean heavy soiling from surfaces. Being non-flammable, with a mild odour and safe for the environment, its use is becoming a priority compared to more aggressive solvents. It is used as a wetting agent in non-aqueous products. MCT has no or very low odour and evaporates slowly. It is a good choice for wax strippers and floor cleaners that are applied over large areas. The use of a floor cleaner containing a fast evaporating solvent may result in unwanted solvent vapour in a confined space. MCT oil can be used in automotive leather care products. caprylic/capric triglyceride

In the paints and coatings industry, MCT's compatibility with many materials and its ability to produce a softer and more uniform coating results in the use of MCT in the production of high performance coatings. MCT has very low volatility and evaporates slowly. It is completely immiscible with water and highly soluble with most non-polar materials. It can be mixed with faster evaporating solvents to reduce evaporation. In aqueous paints it gives a pearlescent effect. In wood paints, MCT acts as a hydrophobising and oiling agent to improve the penetration of the paint into the wood.
