Manganese EDTA is a very pure, water-soluble manganese chelate. Due to its properties, it can be used for foliar fertilisation as a component of NPK. EDTA (ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid) protects its chelating nutrients over a wide pH range (pH 3-10).
In agriculture and horticulture, Mn EDTA 13% is a specially designed substance to supply plants with highly available mangNO cations at moderate pH conditions. The total manganese content of the product (13 % by weight) is 100 % chelated with EDTA, making manganese fully effective and fully available to plants. Due to the 'raspberry' shape of the micro-beads, the product is not hygroscopic and is self-soluble, so no mixing is necessary. The solubility of the product is 400 g/l at 20oC. As no sulphates, chlorides and nitrates are used in the production process, the material is anion-free. This product is an effective source of manganese and is mainly recommended for foliar, hydroponic and soil fertilisation applications. It is recommended for preventive and corrective fertilisation of all agricultural and horticultural crops. Manganese acts as a cofactor, activating about 35 different plant enzymes. Most of these enzymes catalyse redox, decarboxylation and hydrolysis reactions. Manganese plays a key role in the tricarboxylic acid cycle (TCA) as well as in oxidative and non-oxidative decarboxylation reactions. In addition, Mn2+ is a structural component of three enzymes, one of which is superoxide dismutase (MnSOD). MnSOD protects tissues from the damaging effects of the oxygen radical O2, which is produced during various enzymatic reactions. The main symptoms of manganese deficiency are interveinal chlorosis of younger leaves in dicots and greenish grey spots on older leaves of cereals. Other symptoms include inhibition of root growth, cessation of lateral root formation, reduced oil concentration in the seeds and reduced lignin concentration in the roots (which reduces the resistance of the plant to root pathogens). High pH, low organic matter or sandy soils reduce the availability of manganese. Manganese chelate can be used to reduce manganese deficiency in ornamental plants, lawns, field crops and fruit trees.

Plant | Amount, (kg/ha)) | Fertilisation time |
Winter cereals | 1,0-2,0 | Apply at the start of spring regrowth. In case of severe deficiency, make an additional application at the full rate shortly after tillering. |
Spring cereals | 1,0-2,0 | Apply as soon as the leaf area is sufficient to absorb the fertiliser spray. |
Corn | 1,0-2,0 | Apply as soon as the leaf area is sufficient to absorb the spray. |
Fruit trees and shrubs | 1,0-2,0 | Start spraying in early spring and repeat as necessary during the season. |
Pastures | 0,5 - 1,0 | Apply in early spring, repeat fertilisation annually |
Small-scale use: Spray - Prepare a solution of 0.05-0.1% (0.5-1.0 g/l) and spray so that leaves and stems are covered with a thin film of moisture with little or no run-off.
Fertilisation in hydroponics: 0.5-2ppm (1.29-5.14 µmol/l) of manganese can be achieved by adding 3.84-15.38 g of manganese EDTA per 1000 litres of solution.
Do not exceed 0.1% (1 g/l) of any chelate solution or combination thereof. The sensitivity of some fruit varieties and plants to EDTA chelates may be unpredictable. In the absence of local experience of successful use, we strongly recommend small-scale trials before widespread use.
In aquariums, manganese EDTA is used for trace element enrichment in marine aquariums, especially in coral aquariums where manganese is deficient. Manganese chelate has a positive effect on the red pigmentation of corals, is a component of many enzymes, affects the quality of photosynthesis and is essential for the proper nutrition of corals, and its presence can mitigate the negative effects of heat stress on cells. Manganese chelate is also used in planted aquaria. Manganese is an important and essential trace element that affects several physiological processes in marine aquaria. It should be maintained within the recommended range of 1-3 µg/l. It is important not to overdose, as the harmful effects of manganese on marine organisms become significant at higher concentrations.
EDTA is widely used in laboratories to extract metal ions. In biochemistry and molecular biology, ion depletion is a commonly used method for deactivating metal-dependent enzymes, as an assay of their reactivity, or to inhibit damage to DNA, proteins or polysaccharides. In analytical chemistry, EDTA is used for complexometric titration and water hardness analyses, or as a layering agent to remove metal ions that would interfere with the analysis. Used for the separation of lanthanide metals (lanthanides) in ion-exchange chromatography.
