Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), also known as dimethylpolysiloxane or dimethicone, is a silicone polymer with a wide range of applications from cosmetics to industrial lubrication. It is particularly known for its unusual rheological (or flow) properties. PDMS is optically transparent and generally inert, non-toxic and non-flammable. It is one of several types of silicone oil (polymerised siloxane). Its applications range from contact lenses and medical devices to elastomers; it is also found in shampoos (making hair shiny and slippery), foodstuffs (anti-foaming agent), sealants, lubricants and heat resistant tiles.
Dimethicone, also known as PDMS, used in cosmetics, is a silicone that is not subject to any European restrictions. It is one of the most commonly used silicones in cosmetics. Its purpose is to create a surface film around the hair and on the skin to protect it. It also adds sweetness to products and facilitates the use of creams and shampoos. It is used to some extent in all products, either to make the products brighter, more pleasant and therefore more marketable, or to compensate for the drying effect of certain ingredients such as surfactants. PDMS is widely used in cosmetics in moisturising lotions, where it is listed as an active ingredient for the purpose of "skin protection". Some cosmetic formulations contain concentrations of dimethicone and related siloxane polymers up to 15%. Dimethicone is an effective conditioner (especially for damaged hair) as it effectively retains moisture and protects against heat stress, resulting in less hair frizz and breakage. Its functions (INCI):
- Anti-foaming: Eliminates foam during production / reduces foaming in liquid finished products
- Emollient : Softens and smoothes the skin
- Skin conditioning : Maintains good skin condition
- Skin protection: Helps to prevent the skin from the damaging effects of external agents
In the food industry, PDMS is added to many cooking oils (as a defoaming agent) to prevent oil splashing during cooking. As a result, traces of PDMS can be found in many fast food products such as chicken fried steak, French fries, milkshakes, etc. It is listed as E900 under the European Food Additive Regulations.
In agriculture, modified PDMS is used as a penetrant for herbicides. It sticks to leaves and improves the uptake of herbicides.
In livestock farming, PDMS is effective in treating lice. This is not thought to be due to suffocation (or poisoning), but because it blocks the release of water, which kills the insects due to the physiological stress of prolonged immobility or the disturbance of internal organs, such as the intestines. Dimethicone is the active ingredient in an anti-bug spray for cats and has been found to be as effective as its more toxic counterpart that is widely used. The parasite becomes trapped and immobilised in the substance, thus preventing the emergence of adult fleas for more than three weeks.
In hydraulic fluids, dimethicone is used in the active silicone fluid of automotive viscous limited slip differentials and clutches. It is also used to lubricate rubber or silicone gaskets, in the manufacture of adhesives and aquarium sealants. PDMS is also used as a component in silicone grease and other silicone-based lubricants, as a defoamer, in mould release agents, polishes, etc.
In solar panels and their efficiency enhancement, PDMS is a common surface material used for passive cooling of solar panels, with high solar reflectance and heat dissipation. Thus, dimethicone-coated solar panels heat up more slowly and cool down more quickly, increasing the amount of energy generated and thus the efficiency. At the same time, dirt sticks less to the glass surface of the panels.
