Denatonium, commonly sold as denatonium benzoate, is the bitterest known chemical compound, with a bitterness limit for benzoate of 0.05 ppm. For most people, an unbearable bitterness of as little as 10 ppm is present in solution. Denatonium salts are usually colourless and odourless solids but are often sold as solutions. They are used as bittering agents to prevent inappropriate ingestion. Denatonium is used in denatured alcohol, antifreeze, preventive nail biting preparations, respirator mask fit tests, animal repellents, liquid soaps, shampoos etc. It is not known to pose any long-term health risk.

Denatonium benzoate is used in the production of technical (deanatured) alcohol mainly for its bitterness. Denatonium benzoate is used to denature ethanol so that it does not qualify as an alcoholic beverage, as its existing bitterness makes it intolerable for consumption and promotes reflux. This treatment renders the ethyl alcohol suitable for technical use only, thus eliminating or reducing tax and sales restrictions. The most widely used denaturing formula in the EU is denaturing formula 5, which uses 1 gram of denatonium benzoate per 100L of absolute alcohol.

In the cosmetic industry,denatonium benzoate is used as an ingredient in certain nail varnishes and non-chewable nail varnishes because the bitter denatonium substance causes repulsion. In the manufacture of fragrances, it is used as an active ingredient or to enhance the odour of the product and on the skin. Its functions (INCI):

• Denaturant : makes cosmetic products unpleasant. Usually added to cosmetic products containing ethyl alcohol
• Masking : Reduces or suppresses the odour or basic taste of the product

In animal husbandry, denatonium benzoate is used in animal repellents (especially for large mammals such as deer or wild boar). A solution is prepared and sprayed on plants. They become so bitter that animals simply do not eat them anymore and subsequently do not visit the area. It is applied as a repellent to young shoots, branches and other surfaces to prevent animals from gnawing on it and thus avoiding property damage. It has been used to protect rat poison from human consumption because humans can detect denatonium at much lower concentrations than rodents. On farms, denatonium benzoate is used to prevent cannibalism in pigs and aspiration mastitis in cattle.

In the construction industry, denatonium benzoate is applied to various surfaces as a bittering agent to prevent heavy consumption of hazardous materials. It is also applied to outdoor cables and wires to prevent rodents from gnawing on parts and equipment.

In the automotive and cleaning industries, denatonium benzoate is useful as an aversive (repellent) additive to prevent accidental ingestion of hazardous car care products. In Europe and some US states, denatonium benzoate is required to be added to ethylene glycol or antifreeze and windscreen washer fluids. Common household products such as window cleaners, disinfectants, matches, batteries and accumulators, shoe polish, washing powder and insecticides contain a certain amount of denatonium benzoate to discourage oral consumption.

In crop production ,deanthonium benzoate is used as a component of beitz or beico, which is related to the protection of seeds and plants against insect damage. Seeds are protected against insects, in particular wireworms, when treated with deanthonium benzoate. At the same time, the seeds are protected against rodents, which may feed on the seeds.
