Isethionates are esters of long-chain aliphatic carboxylic acids with isethionic acid (2-hydroxyethanesulfonic acid) or its salts such as sodium isethionate. Isethionates are a class of extremely mild anionic surfactants which, unlike conventional soaps, retain their detergency properties even in hard water. Isethionates are solids which are often mixed with fatty acids (up to 30 % by weight) to reduce their freezing point. Mixtures with amphoteric surfactants (such as cocamidopropyl betaine) have been suggested to dissolve low soluble isethionates. Such mixtures can be used to prepare aqueous concentrates which are liquid, clear and transparent at room temperature. Isethionates have excellent skin compatibility, excellent foaming (even in hard water), good cleaning properties and a pleasant skin feel. They are non-toxic and easily biodegradable. They are not permanently stable at pH levels between 5 and 8. Isethionates are used in solid soaps (called syndettes) and other personal care products such as lotions, washing and shower gels, shampoos, liquid soaps, shaving creams and other cosmetic and dermatological preparations.

In cosmetics sodium cocoyl isethionate is used because of its particularly mild effect on the skin, so that it has almost no effect on the skin barrier. SCI is commonly used in products intended for children or people sensitive to the effects of SCS (sodium coco sulphate). It also gives a rich, creamy foam, is vegetable fatty acid based and easily biodegradable. The most common SCI content in the mass of the final product may range from 2 to 60 per cent. The SCI in the powder form does not need to be further milled as it is already ready for production by the manufacturer. This foaming agent is suitable for the production of solid shampoos and detergents. The solid shampoos produced are highly concentrated because the active ingredients are not diluted by water. SCI is used in such products because the manufactured products are particularly convenient to carry on trips, as they take up little space and do not spill. Solid shampoos and cleansers can be used without packaging or with double packaging, making them environmentally popular products. Its functions (INCI)

SCI 80 can be used as main surfactant or co surfactant. Depending on concept, heat SCI 80 with parts of the water phase or add to surfactant base (poorly water soluble).

As a main surfactant, SCI 80 gives a creamy, stable, dense foam. It is ideal for a soft, smooth, silky skin feeling. Recommended use concentration: 10 - 60%

As a co-surfactant, SCI 80 gives your formulations mildness with a luxurious skin feeling. It helps disperse lime soap effectively. Recommended use concentration: 1 - 20%

In medicine, SCI is used in the manufacture of external preparations, e.g. therapeutic shampoos, skin creams. Due to its mild action, sodium cocoyl isethionate does not irritate damaged and irritated skin, and due to its moisturizing effect, it helps the active medical ingredients to work better in the healing of skin lesions and diseases. Concentrations ranging from 2% to 60% in the final product are commonly encountered.

In animal husbandry, sodium cocoyl isethionate is used in veterinary preparations for the treatment of irritated skin and/or for the manufacture of very mild coat care products. The use of such products results in a finer, more voluminous coat, but the animals themselves do not shed because their skin is not irritated.

In the education, sodium cocoyl isethionate is used as a foaming agent, both as one of the components in cosmetic production, as a mild foaming agent in "foam parties" and as a surfactant in emulsion formation experiments.
