A substance with the chemical formula Na2SiO3. It is an ionic compound consisting of sodium cations Na+ and polymeric metasilicate anions . It is a colorless, crystalline, hygroscopic, solid water-soluble substance which is the main constituent of commercial sodium silicate solutions.

In metalworking, sodium metasilicate is used as an anticorrosive additive or as an additive to metal cleaners. It is often used in heating systems when they are filled with water, as it forms a micro-film in the internal systems which prevents corrosion of the heating systems. It has virtually no effect on the efficiency of heating. Combined with sodium bicarbonate, it produces a paint stripper for aluminum surfaces. This is particularly important if the aluminum surface is to be kept smooth and free from chemical corrosion.

In construction, sodium metasilicate can be used as a cement or binder, especially in high temperature environments or in environments where there is contact with water or acids. It can also be used as a hardening agent for concrete. It is included in sprayed concrete when the dry concrete mix is mixed with water in hoses and sprayed onto the surface. The result is up to 10% stronger.

In the paper industry, it is used to adjust paper size and coating. It can also be used in combination with hydrogen peroxide in the pulp bleaching process where it acts as a buffer and stabilizer.

In cosmetics, sodium metasilicate is used in skin care products, hair dye, eye make-up and oral hygiene products. Due to its combination of excellent properties, including good emulsifying and suspending properties, and alkaline properties at a constant pH, sodium metasilicate can also be used as an anticorrosive agent for cosmetic containers. Main INCI functions:

  • Anti-corrosive: prevents corrosion of packaging
  • pH adjuster: Stabilizes the pH of cosmetics
  • Chelating: Reacts and forms complexes with metal ions which may affect the stability and/or appearance of cosmetic products.

In automobiles, sodium metasilicate is used in the US government CARS programme to destroy obsolete cars. A concentrated solution is used to replace all engine oil in a car. The car is started, and within minutes, when the heat reaches the right threshold for the chemical to break down, the engine is irreparably damaged. The required temperature is greater than ~98,88 °C (210 F). Sodium metasilicate can also be used to repair engines. Cylinder head gasket leaks can be corrected by adding sodium metasilicate to the coolant. As the coolant circulates, some of it passes through the hole in the gasket. The sodium metasilicate forms a film which seals the hole. Sodium metasilicate is also used to repair minor damage to silencers.

In schools, it is used to form stalagmites and stalactites because the sodium metasilicate solution reacts with metal ions to solidify and form insoluble structures. When the crystals are grown, they are transparent with soft shapes.
