Salicylic acid is a lyophilic monohydroxybenzoic acid that is classified as a phenolic acid and a beta hydroxy acid (BHA). Salicylic acid has an elemental composition of C7H6O3, is crystalline, odorless and is used in organic synthesis and other applications such as a plant hormone.
In cosmetics, salicylic acid has a very wide range of applications and uses. It is used in anti-dandruff products, in hair conditioners, as a keratolyte, in skin rejuvenation masks, as a preservative in products, in skin conditioners. It exfoliates the surface of the skin - cleansing the pores and fighting blemishes. When used over a longer period of time, the skin becomes visibly clearer and brighter. Salicylic acid relieves pain and improves blood circulation. When applied to the skin, it breaks down sebaceous compounds that can clog pores. However, no more than 2% salicylic acid should be applied to the face (apply only to acne). Up to 3% salicylic acid can be used on other parts of the body, while 10% to 30% salicylic acid dissolves warts.
In medicine salicylic acid is most commonly used to remove the superficial layer of the skin. Wounds, scaling, acne, wrinkles, dandruff and ichthyosis are treated with products containing salicylic acid.
In animal husbandry, salicylic acid is used in preparations for the treatment of the skin, disinfection of hooves, horns and wounds. It can be found in various forms, from liquid to ointments. It can also be found in post-milking products to disinfect the skin to prevent the entry of viruses and bacteria until the teat canal closes.
In the food industry, salicylic acid is used to preserve food and to extract specific/savory flavors. It is not classified as a food additive due to its relatively rare use in food. It is mostly found naturally in food as a constituent of fruits and vegetables. Intolerance to salicylic acid may be encountered and dietary plans are therefore formulated which are practically free of salicylic acid.
In horticulture and crop production, salicylic acid is used as a phytohormone. Salicylic acid causes an increase in temperature in certain organs of thermogenic plants (especially some members of the Aroid family). This is due to impaired electron transport in the mitochondrial respiratory chain. The role of salicylic acid in the development of a non-specific response to stressors and the accumulation of active oxygen species in cells is under active investigation.
