Zinc sulfate. An inorganic compound with the chemical formula ZnSO4. It has three hydrated forms (salt crystals contain water molecules). In either form zinc sulfate is a solid colorless substance. It is also known informally as 'white vitriol'.

In medicine it is used as a food supplement for zinc deficiency. It is used in oral rehydration (oral rehydration) therapy to treat dehydration in the human body.

In production it is mainly used in the hydrated form, especially heptahydrate. It is also used as a coagulant in the manufacture of viscose. Also used as a precursor for lithopone pigment. Another use of zinc sulfate is as an electrolyte in the zinc electroplating process. It can be used as a dye fixative and skin preservative.

In agriculture zinc sulfate is used as a fertiliser. Zinc sulfate increases protein synthesis and promotes plant growth, and increases the resistance of plants to drought, heat and frost. Zinc deficiency can spoil the expected yield, as almost all plants, especially cereals, are sensitive to it. Deficiency of zinc impairs plant respiration and protein synthesis. Zinc fertilisers are best suited to calcareous and carbonate (neutral, alkaline and basic) soils. Zinc sulfate is suitable for foliar application. 0,5-1 kg/ha. Can be used in solutions with plant protection products. Check compatibility of mixed products before use. Use water at min. 150 L/ha. Do not exceed recommended values.

In the cosmetic industry, mainly used as an antimicrobial agent in bath products, dental care and hygiene products. Main INCI functions:

  • Antimicrobial: helps to slow down the growth of micro-organisms on the skin and inhibits microbial growth
  • Anti-plaque: helps prevent plaque formation
  • Astringent: helps tighten skin pores
  • Oral care/hygiene: Provides a cosmetic effect on the oral cavity (cleansing, deodorisation and protection)

Other uses: can be used as a growth regulator for moss on roofs; can be used in the production of beverages if there is a zinc deficiency (more commonly used when yeast is "pushed to its limit" to increase alcohol content).
