Ferrous sulfate is otherwise known as trivalent ferrous sulfate with the formula Fe2(SO4)3. It is commonly found as a raw material in the production of other iron compounds. It is used as a colouring agent or dye fixative, in the manufacture of inks, etc.

In the dyeing industry, ferrous sulfate is used as one of the raw materials in the manufacture of dyes and inks. Iron sulfate solution is used to produce a brownish/brown colour on concrete, limestone or sandstone. Iron sulfate is also used in wood staining to produce darker shades and to highlight wood grain. It is found in some stains.

In horticulture, it is used to acidify the soil, making it easier for plants to absorb nutrients. When planting shrubs and berry bushes, fruit trees, tubers, bulbs, soak the roots in a solution of ferrous sulfate to prevent disease. Use an aqueous solution of 1-5% ferrous sulfate. A lower concentration solution is more suitable for strengthening the lawn itself. A 1% solution can be used initially, with higher concentrations if no significant effect is observed. To prepare the 1% solution, dissolve 100 ml of ferrous sulfate solution in 10 l of water in a plastic container. For sprinkler treatment, a higher volume of water is required - 30 l water/100 m2, for spray treatment - 10 l water/100 m2 lawn.

In water treatment, ferrous sulfate is used as a flocculant (water clarifier) to help settle fine particles and remove phosphorus compounds, thereby reducing eutrophication (water damage) in both industrial and domestic applications. In some cases used as a corrosion inhibitor in copper pipe systems to form a protective film. Ferrous sulfate can also be used to produce FENTON'S REAGENT (ferrous sulphate with hydrogen peroxide), which is used for wastewater treatment by oxidation and/or degradation of organic compounds. Trivalent ferrous sulfate is commonly used for industrial wastewater treatment. It is convenient due to its low cost and is not so relevant in case of overdose due to discoloration of the water due to trivalent ferric ions. The optimum pH for water treatment with iron coagulants is 4.5-6. Iron sulfate coagulant is used in areas where higher temperatures prevail as it is less sensitive than aluminium-based coagulants.

In the metal industry, ferrous sulfate is used as one of the components in aluminium-iron pickling baths, where a milder pickling effect is sought than with acids. Trivalent ferrous sulfate is used as a non-toxic analogue of potassium dichromate for the treatment of aluminium surfaces by etching.
