Benzyl alcohol is an aromatic alcohol with the formula C₆H₅CH₂OH. Benzyl alcohol is a colorless liquid with a mild, pleasant aromatic odor. It is a useful solvent because of its polarity, low toxicity and low vapor pressure.

In cosmetics, benzyl alcohol is used as a bacteriostatic preservative at low concentrations. It is derived from fruit, is a colorless liquid and has a slightly sweet odor. Benzyl alcohol can be found on many different skincare, cosmetic and personal products such as moisturizers, lip balms, face washes and even make-up. Main functions: product preservative to allow for large packaging and multiple uses and to prevent bacterial contamination. A stabilizer that stops the oxidative degradation of the product, which means it allows products to work more efficiently for longer periods of time. An antioxidant that protects against damage caused by free radicals. A solvent, which helps to dissolve other ingredients in the product formula. Viscosity modifier, which reduces viscosity, allowing products to flow more easily and remain more fluid. Flavoring agent, which is naturally fragrant and gives off a slightly sweet scent. As many consumers are concerned about parabens, it is used as an alternative preservative for marketing purposes. Benzyl alcohols are produced naturally, so companies can use them in products and still market them as "natural". Benzyl alcohol is effectively used to treat lice infestations as an active ingredient in shampoo lotions with 5% benzyl alcohol.

In the paint industry, benzyl alcohol is used as a solvent for paint, wax, shellac, varnish and epoxy resin coatings. It can therefore be used in paint strippers, especially in combination with compatible viscosity improvers, to make the mixture adhere to the painted surfaces. One possible formulation is the mixing of benzyl alcohol with glycolic acid and sodium cumene sulphonate to produce a mixture which penetrates very effectively into the paint and varnish coating of the rims, but at the same time does not react with the light alloys of the rims. This results in easy paint removal without damaging the surface and structure of the metal.

In laboratories and educational establishments, benzyl alcohol is used for both research and "fun" experiments. The refractive index of phenylmethanol is almost the same as that of quartz and wool fiber. If a transparent quartz object is immersed in benzyl alcohol, it becomes almost invisible. This test was used to determine without destruction whether the object was really made of quartz. Similarly, white wool immersed in benzyl alcohol also becomes almost invisible, clearly revealing contaminants such as dark and intermingled fibers and plant matter.

In the cleaning industry, it can be used as a degreasing agent in carpet cleaning products.

In the fragrance industry, phenylmethanol is the raw material precursor for a variety of esters and ethers used in the soap, perfume and flavor industries. E.g. benzyl benzoate, benzyl salicylate, benzyl cinnamate, dibenzyl ether, benzyl butyl phthalate. Sometimes used in combination with flavorings to enhance the sense of smell.

In the tobacco industry, benzyl alcohol is used in the e-liquid of electronic cigarettes to enhance the flavors used.

In camping equipment, benzyl alcohol is used as an insect repellent. Due to its properties, it irritates the insect's sense of smell, causing insects to avoid the area.
