Ethoxypropanol is an organic compound that mixes readily with water, is hygroscopic, and is highly soluble in a wide range of materials, including resins, paints and glues. Ethoxypropanol has great potential as it has excellent solvent properties, viscosity and volatility, similar to ethylene oxide-based glycol ethers, which currently suffer from certain limitations due to air and workplace pollution. The use of ethoxypropanol allows for higher workplace exposure limits. Very importantly, it is not currently listed as a hazardous air pollutant in the US federal government's Clean Air Act.
In printing shops, ink stickiness is very important, which leads to ink dusting and paper bleeding and degrades the quality of the print. Too much adhesive can cause the sheet to stick to the decal, which can stop the printing process. Inks are composed of a binder, pigments, solvents and auxiliary materials. It is particularly important to maintain the correct amount of binder, pigments and solvent in the ink preparation. The inks are diluted to the required viscosity and a retarder, ethoxypropanol (about 10 %), is added. Ethoxy propanol is mainly used in the surface coating and printing industries because it can control the flow, alignment and bonding of both surface coatings (including water-based inks) and flexographic inks.
In the paint industry, 1-ethoxy-2-propanol is used in a wide range of applications as it provides good solubilisation due to its bifunctional groups. It is miscible with both polar and non-polar materials and is an effective solvent for a wide range of resins including epoxies, acrylics, alkyds, polyesters, nitrocellulose and polyurethanes. It also offers low toxicity, which is another feature appreciated by users.
In the cleaning industry, ethoxy propanol is used in cleaning products where it provides a low surface tension, fast evaporation rate and low toxicity. It can be used both pure and as an ingredient in cleaning products, e.g. as a grease and paint remover.
In the manufacture of de-icing products, PGEE is used both as a low-volatile, non-smelting component and as an ice-melt permeation enhancer. Due to the inherent properties of non-ionic PAM, ethoxypropanol provides good surface wetting, thus increasing the penetration into ice structures, and prevents freezing when mixed with water.
In crop production, ethoxypropanol is used as an additive in agrochemicals to increase the water solubility of the active ingredients, slow drying, and better penetration through the fatty layer of the plant leaves.
