Dipropylene methyl ether DPM is a mixture of isomers. It is a clear, high boiling, hygroscopic, volatile, harmless, low odor liquid which is miscible with water and common organic solvents. The ether and alcohol groups in the isomers make DPM an excellent solvent for many raw materials used in coatings, e.g. gums and binders. An important feature of DPM is that it acts as a solvent in many aqueous coating systems. It has typical properties of ethers and alcohols. For example, it reacts with acids (to form esters), oxidizing agents (to form the corresponding aldehydes or carboxylic acids), alkali metals (to form alcohols) or aldehydes (to form acetals). DPM can form peroxides with atmospheric oxygen.
In the paint industry, dipropylene glycol monomethyl ether is used as a low-volatility solvent and can extend the drying time and improve the flow of coatings. DPM added in small quantities to paints can control their viscosity, thereby increasing or decreasing their spreadability during painting. It is a very important component in decoupage products as it helps to adjust the drying time and prevents the coatings from cracking during drying. Used for coating systems such as cellulose varnishes or alkyd resin paints, wood brighteners and polishes, printing pastes, leather marking inks and special stamp inks.
In the plastics industry it is used as a solvent in 3D printing. It can be added to 3D plastics to create the appropriate drying time and viscosity of liquid plastic. It can also be used as a cleaning agent after printing objects or to change the surface properties of printed objects.
In cleaning industry, DPM is used in both petroleum-based and water-based cleaning agents. It is also one of the ingredients in household chemicals to dissolve oily soils, to change surface tension and to prevent foaming. In high concentration systems, DPM is used as a fluidizing agent to keep the products liquid and prevent them from thickening. It has the advantage over butyl glycol of low odor and therefore does not distort odors or cause respiratory irritation, even at higher concentrations.
In cosmetics, DPM is used as a humectant and emulsifier. It is commonly found in eye masks, moisturizing serums, shampoos and anti-ageing products. It also acts as a thickening agent, i.e. it liquefies mixtures and prevents them from clumping, separating or thickening. It also helps to dissolve fatty phase components. In perfume production, DPM is used to regulate the speed and intensity of evaporation. It is a medium and slow evaporating solvent. It has 100% water solubility and is ideal as a switch in most solvent systems.
In hydraulics, DPM is a component of hydraulic fluids; a component of drilling and cutting oils;.
