It is ethanol with additional additives that make it unsuitable for use as an intoxicant. Denatured ethanol is made by adding additives that make it poisonous or by coloring it.

The uses of denatured alcohol are almost identical to those of pure ethanol, except for medical purposes, in the food and drink industry and in certain chemical reactions where the addition of denatured ethyl alcohol may impair the reaction. It should also not be used as a fuel.

In laboratories, because of its low melting point (-114,14 °C) and low toxicity, ethanol is sometimes used in laboratories as a coolant. It is also used as an active liquid in spirit thermometers and as a liquid in spirit filament bulbs

In cleaning, due to its antibacterial properties, it is suitable for use as a household cleaning agent on a wide range of surfaces such as wood, glass, plastics, clothing and other textiles (if the denatured alcohol is uncolored). Cleaning performance is enhanced by its good solvent properties - it dissolves grease and stains and removes minor scratches from some surfaces. It evaporates quickly, leaving no residue after cleaning.

In cosmetics it is used the antibacterial properties of ethanol to prevent pathogens from entering the product. Alcohol, also known as ethanol, is a colorless liquid with a strong odor. It is used in cosmetics for its wide range of antimicrobial properties (antifungal, antiviral and antibacterial). It is also used in many other applications as a preservative, solvent or to reduce perspiration in deodorants. INCI Key Functions:

  • Antifoaming: eliminates foaming during manufacturing/reduces foaming in liquid finished products
  • Antimicrobial: helps to slow the growth of micro-organisms on the skin and inhibits microbial growth
  • Astringent: helps tighten skin pores
  • Masking: reduces or suppresses the odor or the main flavor of the product
  • Solvent: dissolves other substances
  • Viscosity control: increases or decreases the viscosity of cosmetics

In anatomy, 70-75 % denatured alcohol can be used for long-term storage of samples as it prevents the accumulation and growth of bacteria that would disrupt the sample.

Most widely used as a solvent. It effectively dissolves a wide range of substances (glues, waxes, grease, paints, red wine, ink stains).

In wood industry. Used in combination with shellac (Shellac varnish). Shellac is a natural resin used as a finish in the manufacture of particleboard and gives a gloss to wood. When denatured ethanol is mixed with shellac, it produces a kibbled substrate that can easily be applied to wood. This mixture not only gives the wood a shine but also protects the wood from scratches and UV rays. Mixing ~0.91 kg (2 lbs) of shellac with 7.57 l (2 gallons) of denatured alcohol results in a mixture that will provide UV and scratch protection for wood. Denatured alcohol can also be used to treat wood after sanding to remove residual dust.

Pest control. Denatured alcohol is an effective insecticide and can be used to eradicate a variety of pests.

As a solvent, ethanol is used for dilution of copper paints, cleaning of painted surfaces, dissolving grease and degreasing surfaces. It is a non-toxic solvent and is therefore very widely used. Ethanol is considered to be a universal solvent because its molecular structure allows it to dissolve both polar, hydrophilic and non-polar, hydrophobic compounds. Since ethanol also has a low boiling point, it is easy to remove from the solution that has been used to dissolve other compounds, making it a popular extracting agent for vegetable oils. In cannabis oil extraction methods, ethanol is often used as an extraction solvent as well as a post-processing solvent to remove oils, waxes and chlorophyll from solution. Ethanol is found in paints, tinctures, markers and personal care products such as mouthwashes, perfumes and deodorants. Polysaccharides precipitate out of aqueous solution in the presence of alcohol, so ethanol precipitation is used in the purification of DNA and RNA.

In cars, it is used as a fuel additive to prevent condensation in the tank, which prevents the fuel system from freezing in winter. Recommended concentration 0.5% to 5% of the fuel content. It can also be used as a brake ice solvent (relevant for freight transport in winter). Pure ethanol is also used to clean brake discs from DOT3 or DOT4 brake fluid.
