Fuller's Earth - a raw material derived from the growth of hormite and smectite minerals and has unique adsorption properties. Acid treatment combines these with the natural properties of the minerals to produce a highly active, rapidly filterable product. The bleaching adsorbent has excellent activity and rapid filtration. It is a porous colloidal clay containing aluminium magnesium silicate.
REGULATORY APPROVALS: The product is classified as a processing aid and is Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS) with Food and Drug Administration (FDA) status. PERFORMANCE CHARACTERISTICS AND BENEFITS
- Excellent removal of chlorophyll from vegetable oils including canola, soybean and sunflower
- Excellent colour removal from oils such as corn, canola and soybean
- Removes soaps and phospholipids
- Excellent adsorption of metals (P, Ca, Fe, Mg, etc.)
- Exceptional filtration characteristics, including long and shorter filtration cycles with pressure build-up at the end of the cycle
In cosmetics, atapulgite is used by adding it to water for bathing or by applying it as a mask to the face and hair. It lightly whitens the skin, improves complexion, removes toxins from the skin, cleanses the skin of various pollutants, helps with rashes, improves blood circulation, deep cleanses the skin and pores. It is particularly suitable for oily skin, prevents the formation of blemishes, reduces acne, stops the spread of acne, regular use creates prevention. Due to its very strong adsorbing properties, it has a strong effect on the outer layer of the epidermis, and fuller's earth powder perfectly removes excess sebum and impurities from the skin. It tones and refreshes, leaving the skin smooth and soft with regular use. Mainly used in face masks, where it acts as an absorbent and exfoliant. Due to its absorbent properties, palygorskite also reduces the volume of cosmetic products and acts as a binder. Like all cosmetic clays, it smoothes the skin and improves blood circulation. It can also be used for dilated capillaries. A cosmetic face mask with this clay cleanses the skin and supplies oxygen to the skin cells. It saturates the skin with trace elements and gives it elasticity. The earth of the phyllum can be used as a mild exfoliant to smooth fine lines, tone, gently whiten and revitalise the complexion. The hair mask nourishes the scalp, stimulates hair growth and prevents dandruff. Atapulgite removes excess sebum from the skin, making it suitable for oily skin. Essential oil can be added to give a pleasant aroma or seaweed can be added to increase the nutritional value of the treatment. INCI Key Features:
- Absorbent: Absorbs water (or oil) in dissolved or fine form
- Non-stick: Helps to ensure the fluidity of solid particles and limit their accumulation in powder cosmetic products or solid cosmetics.
- Volume: reduces the apparent density of cosmetics.
- Gel formation: gives the liquid formulation the consistency of a gel
- Opacity: reduces the transparency or translucency of cosmetics
- Viscosity control: increases or decreases the viscosity of the cosmetic
In the food industry, attapulgite is used in the refining of oils that are particularly difficult to bleach: soybean oil, rapeseed oil, cottonseed oil, sunflower oil, sunflower oil, corn oil, tallow, or low-grade oils. The pressing of the oil introduces large amounts of chlorophyll, phospholipids and colouring agents, which give the oil its dark colour. To remove these substances, a bleaching adsorbent is used, which attracts to itself all the organic substances in the oil, thus clarifying and lightening it. The quantities of 0.5% to 3% of the attapulgite used are added to the oil and left for 15 to 30 minutes, followed by filtration.
Biodiesel production uses a bleaching adsorbent to obtain a clean and clear final product. Biodiesel can be produced either from freshly pressed oil (which is cloudy due to the presence of chlorophyll and other organic matter), or by recycling waste or recovered oil (which contains contaminants from previous use). The raw materials themselves are already cloudy and do not have a marketable appearance. Peresterification reactions produce intermediates (mono and di glycerides, phospholipids, PAMAM, soaps, etc.) which are undesirable in the final product. These difficult-to-clean products are mixed with the atapulgite by adding 0.5% to 3% bleaching adsorbent. After 15 to 30 minutes (oil or RME) the product is filtered and a clear product is obtained. Effective with all types of difficult to bleach oils, ideal for manufacturers with very strict specifications.
In decontamination, Fuller's Earth is used by the military and civilian emergency services to decontaminate CBRN (chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear) contamination. Atapulgite absorbs (adsorbs) organic substances including harmful substances, making it ideal for decontaminating contaminated clothing and equipment.
In animal welfare, Fuller's earth is used in the production of cat litter to absorb organic matter and unpleasant odours. Atapulgite can also be found in food supplements to treat digestive disorders in animals. Thanks to its excellent adsorptive capacity, the digestive tract absorbs all toxins, thereby improving the animal's well-being and digestion.
In cleaning, atapulgite is used to clean marble. As a good absorbent, it removes dust, dirt, grime and stains from the surface and restores the marble's shine. Due to its natural origin, non-toxicity and gentleness to marble, it has been used many times to clean the Indian Taj Mahal Temple.
In water treatment, as adsorbents for water and waste water treatment. Palygorskite particles attract organic matter, small particles (floccules) that are present in the water, and when left to settle, everything settles as sludge, thus purifying the water of pollutants and particulates. The settled sludge is harmless because all the absorbed substances become inactive.
In medicine, attapulgite is used to treat poisoning. Herbicides such as paraquat are lethal to humans when used, so even a small amount of clay in the soil can save the life of a person exposed to paraquat (herbicide), as paraquat binds to the ground in the fuller's earth. Atapulgite and activated carbon are used to treat indigestion and diarrhoea and bind harmful substances that cause diarrhoea.
In the film industry, Fuller's earth powder has been used extensively in films for many years for a variety of applications. In special effects, it is used for pyrotechnic explosions and dust clouds because it travels farther and higher than most natural soils, making the explosion appear larger and is safer than a naturally occurring soil if particles from the explosion were to hit the actors. Fuller's earth is also widely used in make-up, props, wardrobes and chest of drawers as it is considered a 'clean' soil, safer to use around people and easy to clean off. Fuller's earth is used in small quantities by make-up artists to make the face and body look dirty. It is used to make furniture look dusty. In wardrobes, they use a small, loose mesh bag filled with fuller's earth and apply it to clothes to make them look dusty. Used outdoors to turn paved streets into dirt roads, to make dust drip from a vehicle driving on a dirt road, or to show a vehicle's footprint on untraveled ground.
