It is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula Ca(ClO)2. It is the main active ingredient in commercial products, also known as bleaching powder, chlorine powder or chloroalkali, and is used for water purification and as a bleaching agent (bleach). This compound is relatively stable and contains more free chlorine than sodium hypochlorite (liquid chlorine). It is a white solid, although commercial samples are yellow. There is a strong chlorine odor. It is poorly soluble in hard water and is more suitable for use in soft and medium hard water. Available in two forms: dry (anhydrous); and hydrated (aqueous).

In water treatment, calcium hypochlorite is often used to disinfect swimming pools and to disinfect drinking water. It is usually sold commercially at 65-73% purity, with impurities of other chemicals such as calcium chloride and calcium carbonate.

In disinfection, calcium hypochlorite is used both to disinfect surfaces and to neutralise unpleasant odors in public toilets. In some cases, calcium hypochlorite is used to preserve dead animals.

In organic chemistry. Used as an oxidising agent. For example, it is used for the decomposition of glycols, α-hydroxycarboxylic acids and keto acids into fragmented aldehydes or carboxylic acids. Potassium hypochlorite can also be used for the production of chloroform by the haloform reaction, whereby a ketone in an alkaline environment is exposed to a halogen, in this case chlorine, from calcium hypochlorite.

In woodworking, calcium hypochlorite is used as a bleaching or brightening agent for wood, and as a protection against fungus and mould.
