Cetostearyl alcohol, cetearyl alcohol or cetylsteryl alcohol is a mixture of fatty alcohols consisting mainly of cetyl (16C) and stearyl (18C) alcohols, belonging to the fatty alcohol group. It is used as a stabilizer of emulsions, as a clouding agent, as a foaming surfactant and as an aqueous and non-aqueous viscosity enhancer. It imparts a softening sensation to the skin and can be used in water-in-oil emulsions, oil-in-water emulsions and anhydrous formulations.

Benefits

  • Effective emollient and conditioner for skin and hair washing and care cosmetics,
  • softens skin and hair,
  • restores elasticity and softness to hair,
  • rheological modifier (improves the consistency of formulations),
  • foam stabilizer,
  • stabilizes emulsions such as oil-in-water (O/W), water-in-oil (W/O) and anhydrous formulations,
  • does not cause allergic reactions,
  • made from renewable vegetable raw materials.
  • HLB 15.5 (creates oil-in-water emulsions, but only to a limited extent).

In cosmetics cetearyl alcohol is used as an emollient. It helps to thicken creams and stabilize them. It softens and protects the skin without a greasy feel, helps to give a soft, luxurious feel and effectively moisturizes the skin, making it soft and supple. Cetearyl alcohol contains mainly cetyl alcohol (cetyl alcohol) and stearyl alcohol (stearyl alcohol). It is approved for use in organic cosmetics as it is of natural origin. The product is an easy-to-use ingredient in cosmetic emulsions such as creams, lotions and hair care products. It helps to stabilize oil/water mixtures (emulsions), although it does not act as an emulsifier in itself. It is used to thicken the oil phase in body butters, lip balms, lotions, body scrubs, solid shampoos and other home-made body care and hygiene products. It reduces surface tension and contributes to the even distribution of the product when applied. Cetearyl alcohol is present in the following products: shampoos, conditioners, serums, hair masks, hair coloring preparations, hair gels, hand, foot and body creams, eye creams, anti-wrinkle creams, sunscreens, aftershave, self-tanning creams, lotions, moisturizers (including for children), face and body washes, exfoliating scrubs, anti-acne preparations, make-up foundations, make-up primers, mascara, eye pencils, lipsticks, lip balms, make-up removers, depilatory preparations. Dissolve (54°C) or add to hot water phase before use. Typical use level 0,5-10 %. Its main functions (INCI)

  • emollient: softens and smooths the skin
  • Emulsifier : promotes the formation of immiscible liquid mixtures by changing the interfacial tension (water and oil).
  • Emulsion stabilizer: promotes the emulsification process and improves the stability and shelf life of the emulsion.
  • Foam enhancement: improves the quality of the resulting foam by increasing one or more of the following properties: volume, texture and/or stability.
  • Opacifier: Decreases the transparency or translucency of cosmetics
  • Surfactant: Reduces the surface tension of the cosmetic and helps to distribute the product evenly when applied
  • Viscosity : Increases or decreases the viscosity of the cosmetic.

In swimming pools, cetearyl alcohol is an active ingredient in some 'liquid pool coatings' (forming a non-volatile surface layer that reduces evaporation of water, the associated evaporative heat loss and thus retains heat in the pool). The use of such products keeps the pool water warm even though the ambient air temperature may be quite low. At freezing temperatures, this monomolecular layer prevents the formation of ice crystals.

In the lubricants industry, cetearyl alcohol is widely used as an ingredient in lubricants, resins. It is used as an emulsifier and thickener in lubricants to give the desired consistency, stickiness and surface retention. It is also used as an environmentally friendly nut and bolt lubricant.

In the cleaning industry, it is used in laundry detergents to clean fabrics while giving them a soft feel. Cetearyl alcohol is ideal for the care of wool or silk fabrics, as it keeps the wool soft, elastic and does not have a 'starving' effect on the skin.

In animal husbandry, cetearyl alcohol is used in veterinary preparations for the treatment of irritated skin and/or for the production of very mild coat care products. The use of such products results in a finer, more voluminous coat, but the animals themselves do not shed because their skin is not irritated.

In the education cetearyl alcohol is used both in the manufacture and in the acceptance of products used on the skin for decorative purposes (body paints, markers, glitter, toy cosmetics, Halloween cosmetics, etc.).
