Cocamide MEA or cocamide monoethanolamine is a solid, whitish to brownish compound. The solid melts to give a pale yellow viscous clear liquid. It is a mixture of fatty acid amides obtained from the fatty acids of coconut oil by reaction with ethanolamine. Cocamide MEA is a remarkable ingredient with properties very similar to those of cocamide DEA, but it is considered safer than cocamide DEA.

In cosmetics, cocamide MEA is used as a thickening agent, a foam enhancer (making the foam finer and more stable, more cream-like), a washing and viscosity modifier for shampoos (the formulation with cocamide monoethanolamine in the composition and the addition of inorganic salts at the end produces a thickening effect), a foaming agent for bath products such as shampoos and hand soaps, an emulsifier in cosmetics, and as a thickener in solutions. This ingredient can increase foaming capacity and stabilise foam. It can also increase the viscosity of aqueous solution. Cocamide monoethanolamine is highly soluble in both water and fat, making it a good emulsifier. In contrast to other surfactants, it does not have a drying effect, i.e. for example, when used in shampoos, cocamide MEA does not dry the hair and scalp due to the natural fatty acids it contains. It can be used to dissolve various perfumes and active ingredients. Kokamido MEA is mainly used in opaque and syrupy cosmetic formulations to obtain a pearlescent effect. It gives the appearance of pearl because it acts like pearl wax. CMEA increases foam stability and volume, also in the presence of hard water and soap. The reduced water solubility and melting point of monoethanolamides effectively controls the dissolution rate in systems such as suspended toilet blocks, solid soap bars and various tablet formulations. Kokamid MEA works optimally with anionic surfactants at activity ratios of 5-10%. Its functions (INCI)

• Viscosity control: increases or decreases the viscosity of cosmetics.

In metalworking, cocamide MEA is used as a corrosion inhibitor in water-based semi-synthetic and synthetic metalworking fluids or polishing pastes.

In the plastics industry, it is widely used as an antistatic agent, e.g. in the production of food-grade polyethylene film or polyvinyl chloride (PVC) packaging. Also, cocamide MEA is mixed with metal salts to produce an antistatic agent for polystyrene or impact-resistant rubber-polystyrene blends.

In agriculture, cocamide diethanolamine is used as a tackifier in the processing of cotton seeds.
