Thiosulfur is an important organic sulphur compound, usually found as a white or pale yellow crystalline powder, odourless and bitter tasting. It is soluble in water and its solubility increases with increasing temperature. It is also soluble in polar solvents such as ethanol and methanol, but insoluble in non-polar solvents such as ether and benzene. This property allows thiourea to dissolve and react in different solvents.

In agriculture, thiourea is used both for direct fertilisation and in combination with plant protection products as an effective ingredient in herbicides, insecticides and fungicides. Thiourea has three functional groups: amino, imino and thiol, each with an important biological role. Thiourea is increasingly used to improve plant growth and productivity under normal and stress conditions. The use of thiourea as a seed treatment, foliar spray or as a medium amendment is more effective under environmental stress conditions than under normal conditions. When used as a seed treatment, thiourea increases seed germination, when used as a foliar spray, gas exchange properties are improved, and when used as a medium amendment, root growth and multiplication are improved. This suggests that thiourea is more effective in the tissues where it is applied. Although to varying degrees, thiourea is effective in improving plant growth and development under drought, salinity, heat stress and heavy metal toxicity. At the physiological level, it improves leaf gas exchange, nutrient uptake by roots and subsequent assimilation. At the biochemical level, exogenously applied thiourea improves sugar metabolism and protein biosynthesis. At the molecular level, thiourea modulates the pattern of gene expression independent of stress. It is likely that thiourea triggers the mechanism of gene expression signalling. In some cases, thiourea is used as a rodenticide, i.e. an anti-rodent agent.

In the chemical industry, thiourea can be a reducing or oxidising agent in electrochemical reactions. Its redox potential can be measured and controlled, allowing thiourea to be used in electrochemical reactions and electrochemical sensors. It has good thermal stability and can be processed at elevated temperatures without degradation. However, in the presence of strong acids or bases, thiourea may decompose or hydrolyse.

In photography, thiourea is used as a photo fixative. It helps to stabilise the image formed on photographic paper or film. Thiourea is used as an auxiliary in diazo paper, photosensitive photocopy paper and almost all other types of copy paper. It is also used to tint silver gelatin photographic prints e.g. "Sepia toning".

In metalworking, electroplating processes, thiourea is used as a gold and silver leaching agent in the mining industry. In electroplating processes it is used to produce an unstable but very strong peroxide: thioperoxide. By coating the metal surface with a layer of zinc, thiourea helps to form a smoother and stronger layer, with better adhesion of the metals and longer corrosion protection. In silver electroplating, silver crystals gradually grow on the thiourea adsorption layer, which means that the size and quantity of silver crystals is closely related to the thiourea deposition layer. Chemical electroplating of copper (Cu) and its alloys, the addition of thiourea to the plating solution will result in the formation of appropriate structures, thus coating the surface of the metal to be electroplated. Throughout the process, the concentration of thiourea must be controlled within a range of 0,3 to 2,0 mol/litre in order to maximise the coordination efficiency and to avoid uneven plating.

In the rubber industry, thiourea is used to produce flame retardant resins and vulcanisation accelerators. Thiourea is a building material for pyrimidine derivatives. Thus, thiourea condenses with β-dicarbonyl compounds. The amino group of the thiourea initially condenses with the carbonyl, followed by cyclisation and tautomerisation. Desulfurisation yields pyrimidine.

In the field of paints and pigments, thiourea can be used to synthesise certain specific paints and pigments.

In the sewage treatment industry, thiourea is used in bio-sewage purifiers because, by bringing in micro-elements, it stimulates the growth of micro-organisms which break down the residues in the sewage. It can be found in detergents as a mild bleach and stain remover.
