Dichloromethane (DCM, methylene chloride or methylene bichloride) is a chloroorganic compound with the formula CH2Cl2. This colourless, volatile, chloroform-like liquid with a sweet odour is widely used as a solvent. Although it is immiscible with water, it is slightly polar and miscible with most organic solvents.

In the paint industry, dichloromethane is used for its solvent properties. In paint strippers, one of the earliest uses of dichloromethane, dichloromethane is mixed with other chemical components to increase its effectiveness on certain coatings. Typical additives are alcohols, acids, amines or ammonium hydroxide, detergents and liquid paraffin.

In metalworking, dichloromethane is used as a solvent for the steam degreasing of metal parts, and can also be mixed with petroleum distillates and other chlorinated hydrocarbons and used as an immersion-type cleaner in the metalworking industry.

In the chemical industry, dichloromethane is used in the manufacture of polycarbonate plastics from bisphenol and phosgene, in the manufacture of photoresist coatings and as a carrier solvent in the manufacture of insecticides and herbicides. In the pharmaceutical industry, it is used as a process solvent in the manufacture of steroids, antibiotics, vitamins and, to a lesser extent, as a solvent in the coating of tablets.

As a solvent, dichloromethane is usedin various industries as a solventfor the extraction of spices and brewing hops as well as for the decaffeination of coffee. It is also used as a carrier solvent in the textile industry, in the production of photographic film and as a blowing agent for polymer foams. Grain fumigation, oil deparaffining, paints and adhesives and plastics production.

In the refrigeration/conditioning industry, it is used as a component of low-pressure refrigerants, in air-conditioning units and as a low-temperature heat transfer fluid.

Aerosol base: Dichloromethane is used as an aerosol propellant in aerosol products such as spray paints, cleaners and lubricants. It evaporates rapidly when the valve of the aerosol can is opened, creating a pressure that forces the product out of the can.

Dichloromethane is used in adhesives as a solvent to dissolve the resin or polymer used to make the adhesive. This solvent creates a solution that can be applied to the surfaces to be bonded. The main advantage of using dichloromethane in adhesives is that it dries quickly. Its rapid evaporation allows surfaces to be bonded quickly, which is particularly useful when fast curing times are required, such as in automotive manufacturing or construction, especially for the production of contact adhesives or solvent-based cements.
